Fisherman Bill Orr Teaches Two-Day Fly Tying Class

Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) is working with fisherman Bill Orr, who co-authored the book Fly Patterns of Northern New Mexico, to offer another two-day fly tying class, 1:30-3:30 p.m., March 19 and 26. 
 
Participants will create their own ties designed for local fishing and receive a free copy of Orr’s book. All experience levels are welcome, even those who think they are all thumbs.

Solar Panels On State Buildings Passes Committee

SANTA FE ― An important committee of the New Mexico House of Representatives March 9 voted on a bipartisan basis to advance Senate Bill 227, a bill requiring state government to install solar energy panels on its 750 buildings, so long as it would provide a net savings on utility costs and not require any upfront costs. 
 
Sen. Jeff Steinborn of Las Cruces, the bill’s sponsor, said the legislation will give taxpayers and the State potentially huge potential savings on electric and energy costs.

Sipapu Offers Events And Extra Hour Of Skiing

VADITO ― Sipapu Ski Resort officials announced that operating hours will change with Sunday’s Daylight Saving Time, providing skiers with an extra hour on the slopes. 
 
Sunday, March 12 through Saturday, March 18, lifts will turn 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Sunday, March 19 through Sunday, March 26, Sipapu will be open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
 
Sipapu will then be open 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.weekends only, April 1 and 2 and April 8 and 9. For the latest conditions, visit Sipapu’s snow report.

Tuesday, March 14 is Family Night at the Los Alamos Nature Center. Enjoy an evening of games and hands-on activities, 6-7 p.m., with Mesa Public Library’s Melissa Mackey.

The nature center will be open for exploring the exhibits until 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The second Tuesday of each month is Family Night at the Los Alamos Nature Center and thanks to a generous sponsorship from the Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos, this program is free to all.

Bandelier Assists Fire Investigation Class March 14-16

Bandelier National Monument and the East Jemez Interagency Fire Center will be assisting March 14-16 with the field portion of a wildland fire investigation class that includes exercises examining common ignition types.
 
To provide hands-on experience for the class members, instructors will ignite very small sample fires, totaling approximately 5 acres, on a portion of Bandelier just across State Highway 4 from the Fire Center.
