In Reversal After NCLA Suit, DOJ To Allow Prisoners Moved To Home Confinement For COVID To Remain There

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The New Civil Liberties Alliance (NCLA) commends Attorney General Merrick Garland and the Department of Justice (DOJ) for reversing course on the idea of automatically returning prisoners put on home confinement to prison once the pandemic ends.

Under an opinion from the Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) last week, prisoners released to home confinement pursuant to 2020’s Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act will not automatically return to prison post-pandemic and will be eligible to remain at home instead.

BeWellnm Health Insurance Extends Enrollment Deadline

ALBUQUERQUE — beWellnm, the New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange, is extending its enrollment period and premium payments for effective coverage beginning Jan. 1, 2022.

New Mexicans now have until Dec. 31, 2021 to enroll and pay their premium to receive coverage for Plan Year 2022 starting the first of the year.

New Mexico residents who would prefer to have effective coverage beginning Feb. 1, 2022 still have until Jan. 15, 2022 to enroll.

New Mexico COVID-19 Update Dec. 23: 1,150 New Cases, Totaling 342,649 With 44 New Deaths And 295,977 Recovered

SANTA FE — New Mexico state health officials announced 1,150 new COVID-19 cases today.

Los Alamos County reported 6 new cases, bringing the total to 1003 people who have tested positive for COVID-19. (County totals are subject to change upon further investigation and determination of residency of individuals positive for COVID-19.)

This update includes 44 new deaths in New Mexico related to COVID-19 and a 7-Day positivity rate of 9.4 percent.

Per the state Department of Health, the most recent cases are:

  • 387 new cases in Bernalillo County
  • 2 new cases in Catron County
  • 57 new cases
