WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Senate unanimously passed on Wednesday the Fire Ready Nation Act, bipartisan legislation introduced by U.S. Senators Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, and Ranking Member Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.).

Santa Fe National Forest Announces Prescribed Fire Projects

SANTA FE —The Santa Fe National Forest is planning prescribed fire operations in September, pending all required approvals. We estimate this work to continue through the fall and winter as weather conditions allow.

Prescribed fire helps reduce overgrown vegetation to protect local communities, infrastructure and natural resources from catastrophic wildfires.

Containment: 90 %

Location: Located in the Coyote Ranger District, 8 miles north of New Mexico State Road 96 and west of the Chama River Canyon Wilderness.

Personnel: 5 

Resources: 1 engine

Fuels: Oak brush, ponderosa pine, Piñon-juniper

Highlights: This is the final update for the Laguna Wildfire.

Engines continue to monitor and patrol the Laguna Wildfire perimeter daily.  No smoke has been visible for the last two weeks.

Multiple Roads On Santa Fe National Forest Damaged Following Recent Storms

SANTA FE — Multiple roads on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) were damaged and washed out following severe storms. Shaun Sanchez, Forest Supervisor, stated, “Our engineers and road crew are assessing road damage, prioritizing areas with emergency access needs, and working to repair roads leading up to the Labor Day weekend. With increased traffic over the holiday, we ask that the public exercise extreme caution when driving through the forest.”

SANTA FE — All Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) District Offices and the Supervisor’s Office in Santa Fe will be closed for the federal holiday Monday, Sept. 1, and will resume regular business hours Tuesday, Sept. 2.

As the nation gears up for the Labor Day holiday weekend, the Santa Fe National Forest encourages everyone to help prevent human-caused fires with a few helpful tips while visiting public lands.

Nationally, 9 out of 10 wildfires are caused by humans, including half of all wildfires on national forests.

Scenes From 2025 ‘Guns Vs. Hoses’ For Special Olympics

Scene from the Los Alamos Police Department (LAPD) and Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) charitable softball game dubbed ‘Guns vs. Hoses’ played Friday at Overlook Park in White Rock. Following a fun and exciting match, the hoses doused the guns 38-7. The teams played to raise money for the Special Olympics. It has been a long-standing tradition for LAPD and LAFD to come together to support local Special Olympics athletes.
