SFNF Plans La Jara Prescribed Burn

SFNF News:
 
SANTA FE Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) plan to conduct the La Jara prescribed burn on the Cuba Ranger District sometime between May 22 and June 30, when favorable conditions, including fuel moisture levels, air quality and weather forecasts, provide an optimal window.
 
The 338-acre unit is just north of the community of La Jara. The La Jara prescribed burn is designed to remove dead forest fuels, provide community protection and promote forest health. Prescribed fires are always managed with firefighter and public safety as the first priority.

Deadline Is Friday To Volunteer As ‘Actors’ For County-Wide Emergency Exercise At UNM-LA

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos County will be conducting a County-wide active shooter exercise Saturday, May 18 at the University of New Mexico – Los Alamos campus at 4000 University Dr. in Los Alamos.

The campus will be closed May 18 for the exercise, which is being conducted in order to test and improve the County’s overall preparedness in responding to an active shooter event. The County has received 15 applications to be volunteers as “actors” in the exercise, but would like to have more participation from the community.

Los Alamos County Emergency Exercise Scheduled At UNM-LA; Campus Closed To Public May 18

This Saturday, May 18, Los Alamos County’s Emergency Management Division will be conducting an Active Shooter Full-Scale Exercise on the UNM-LA Campus in Los Alamos.
 
The campus will be closed to the public that day. This exercise is being conducted to assess the immediate response by law enforcement and fire/rescue personnel to a simulated active shooter event at the campus. The exercise will take place over seven hours, beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing until 3 p.m.
 
There will be setup and preparation activities beginning as early as 6:30 a.m., May 18.

SFNF Plans Burn On Cuba Ranger District

SANTA FE Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) plan to take advantage of favorable conditions, including fuel moisture levels, air quality and weather forecasts, to conduct a prescribed burn today on the Jacquez unit of the Moya treatment area on the Cuba Ranger District.
 
The 1,140-acre unit is just west of the community of Llaves and east of the community of Lindrith. The Jacquez unit prescribed burn is designed to remove dead forest fuels, provide community protection and promote forest health.

JEMEZ SPRINGS – Valles Caldera National Preserve will initiate prescribed burn projects beginning later this week and early next week, dependent upon suitable weather and fuel conditions.

The prescribed burns will take place within a 630-acre project area in Banco Bonito and a 112-acre area on Cerro Seco. Both locations are within the western half of the preserve. Police Shooting Involves Angel Fire Police Department

ANGEL FIRE – The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was called to investigate a police shooting involving the Angel Fire Police Department.

The initial investigation indicates that Sunday morning an Angel Fire Police officer responded to a residential structure fire at 14 Mountain Lake Terrace in Angel Fire. At the scene, an Angel Fire police officer encountered a man with a knife. During the encounter, the Angel Fire police officer discharged his weapon. SANTA FE After studying conditions, including fuel moisture levels, weather forecasts, air quality and wind direction, fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) have decided to delay the previously announced Pacheco Canyon prescribed burn until Sunday, May 5.
