Update as of this morning on the 375 Fire in the Pecos Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest, west of Forest Road 375 and 1.5 miles east of the Glorieta Lookout.

Cause: Lightning

Fuel: Ponderosa pine and grass understory

Weather: Winds calm

LAFD Mourns Death Of Manfred ‘Fred’ Herrmann

Manfred ‘Fred’ Herrmann April 4, 1985 – May 27, 2018.

The Los Alamos Fire Department is sad to announce the passing of former Firefighter and US Marine Manfred “Fred” Herrmann. Manfred worked with the LAFD from 2008-2015. During his time with LAFD Manfred served on the Honor Guard, Technical Rescue and Hazmat teams. Manfred also assisted with instructing during academies.

Valles Caldera Postpones Fiesta En El Valle Until September Due To Stage III Fire Restrictions

JEMEZ SPRINGS — With Valles Caldera National Preserve and surrounding public land under Stage III fire restrictions, National Park Service (NPS) officials have decided to cancel the June 9 Fiesta en el Valle and reschedule the event for Saturday, Sept. 8.

 

“Public safety is paramount,” said Superintendent Jorge Silva-Bañuelos. “This event was anticipated to draw in a large crowd. In the event of a wildfire, it would have been difficult to evacuate everyone safely.”

Update: Ute Park Fire Grows To 31,930 Acres … Remains At Zero Percent Containment

Severe thunderstorms are predicted for the Ute Park Fire and the surrounding area throughout today. Up to 1” of rain and 30 mph winds from the south are expected to impact the area. Flash flooding is expected. Precipitation may help limit fire activity in the short term, but critical fire weather conditions are expected to return. Firefighters are prepared to respond to new starts within the area as wide-spread lightning is expected today as well.

When I was Lieutenant Governor of Kiwanis Division 3 from 2008 to 2010, I visited what was then the Kiwanis Club of Cimarron many times.

I would recruit three or four other Los Alamos Kiwanians; drive to Cimarron (population 1,021) by way of Taos and Ute Park; stay at the wonderful old, historic (and “haunted”) St. James Hotel; and pay an official Kiwanis visit to the Cimarron club during its weekly breakfast session in the hotel’s meeting room.
