Large Boulder Damages Car On Truck Route

Los Alamos police temporarily closed the Truck Route to traffic Saturday night after a large boulder fell onto the roadway just east of the LANSCE facility. A passing car collided with the boulder, damaging the car, which had to be towed from the scene. The driver was not injured. Los Alamos Police Sgt. Fire crews continue to manage the lightning-caused Peggy Fire as it moves down slope where the vegetation has transitioned from ponderosa pine to thick stands of piñon and juniper. 
 
Thick fuels within the tight canopy of the active fire zone include a heavy load of slash and dead trees that have succumbed to insects and disease. Fire behavior was active throughout most of Wednesday, reflecting increased temperatures and lower humidities.

SFNF Issues Temporary Closure For Segment Of Continental Divide Trail Due To Ojitos Fire

SANTA FE –  The Santa Fe National Forest has closed a segment of the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) on the Coyote Ranger District to provide for public safety during operations on the Ojitos Fire in the Chama River Wilderness.

The temporary closure is in effect until Aug. 31, 2017, unless it is rescinded earlier.

The restricted area includes CDT #813 from the Ojitos Trailhead at Skull Bridge on the Chama River to the CDT crossing at N.M. 96, known locally as Ojitos Trail #298. Potentially hazardous conditions may exist on this trail section until the fire is controlled.

Current Situation: Crews continued blacklining the perimeter of the Peggy Fire over the weekend. Fire activity was low to moderate throughout the day Saturday until about 5:30 p.m. when a storm cell brought much stronger winds out of the north, drastically increasing fire activity and pushing the fire to the south. The winds also helped create the very visible smoke column in the late afternoon. The blacklining that crews had worked on over the past several days held the fire in spite of the dramatic shift in wind direction

Here is the latest update on the Peggy Fire burning on the Peggy Mesa, approximately two miles northwest of the Gilman Tunnels on the Jemez Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest:

Cause: Lightning struck a single standing dead tree. The fire subsequently spread into surrounding dead and down timber and brush.

Cow Fire Ignites On Santa Fe National Forest

The Cow Fire has consumed under an acre since starting Tuesday when lightning hit a single standing dead tree. The tree subsequently fell, and fire started creeping slowly down the slopes.

Although it remains small, the Cow Fire is putting out a lot of smoke due to the concentration of dead and down fuels. A rocky area on the north side of the fire is holding it, and green drainages to the east and west of the fire should help keep it from growing. Fire crews are monitoring the Cow Fire.

Driver In Single-Vehicle Rollover Pleads Not Guilty

A 21-year-old Hernandez man involved in a July 9 single-vehicle rollover on Diamond Drive pleaded not guilty to charges of driving under the influence, speeding and open container Monday before Municipal Judge Alan Kirk.

Bobbyray Sisneros was arrested after Los Alamos Police and Fire Department personnel responded at 8 p.m. to the scene of the crash. Sisneros and his two passengers were transported to Los Alamos Medical Center where they were treated for minor injuries.
