Los Alamos Deputy Fire Chief Justin Grider is being honored as New Mexico Fire Officer of the Year this evening at the 4th annual New Mexico Fire & EMS Expo in Soccoro.

Fire Officer of the Year is awarded to a fire officer who has emphasized leadership, dedication, integrity, professional development, service to the public and contributions to the Fire Service as a whole.

LAFD/LAPD Host 9/11 Memorial Climb

The Los Alamos Fire and Police Departments held a 9/11 Memorial Climb this morning at the Pajarito Ski Hill to honor the fallen in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on America. They started at the lodge and went to the top via the fire road. Both Fire Chief Troy Hughes and Police Chief Dino Sgambellone participated in the event. Prescribed Burn Planned On Santa Fe National Forest

SFNF News:

Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest are planning to conduct a prescribed burn in the Santa Fe Watershed on the Española Ranger District. 

The prescribed burn was postponed last spring due to high winds and ”red flag” weather conditions, which could have resulted in extreme fire behavior. 

Fire managers would like to complete the Santa Fe Watershed burn by the end of September, but that window is dependent on favorable conditions, including fuel moisture levels, air quality and weather forecasts, and may be extended further into the fall months.

Alert: Hazard Tree Felling On Cañada Bonita Trails … Hikers Urged To Use Caution

SFNF News:

SANTA FE – Crews are working on the Cañada Bonita trails accessed from the Pajarito Ski Area trailhead through Sept. 2, felling hazard trees in the burn area from the 2011 Las Conchas Fire.

In coordination with the Santa Fe National Forest, the Southwest Nordic Ski Club contracted with the non-profit American Conservation Experience to perform the work along the original road and on the trail loops above the main trail.
