Reported Gas Leak At LAHS Was False Alarm

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos Fire Department reports no gas leak found at Los Alamos High School this morning.

Buildings have been turned back over to LAPS and students have returned to class after being evacuated as a precaution.

The report of the odor of gas was called in at about 8 a.m. to the Department of Public Utilities. DPU crews and LAFD investigated and determined that it was a false alarm.

Motorcycle Driver Transported To LAMC In Stable Condition Following Accident On N.M. 502

Motorcycle Accident:

A man driving a motorcycle westbound on N.M. 502 at approximately 2:30 p.m. today, crashed into a guard rail and landed on the other side of it in the dirt.

Los Alamos Fire Department EMT’s treated the man, reported to be about 20 years old, at the scene and transported him in stable condition to Los Alamos Medical Center.

“He was wearing protective gear and that is so important,” Deputy Fire Chief Justin Grider said.

Breaking News: Los Alamos Middle School Gas Leak Contained – Students Are Safe

BREAKING News:

A gas leak at Los Alamos Middle School today has been contained and all students and staff are safe.

Los Alamos County Deputy Fire Chief Justin Grider just told the Los Alamos Daily Post that the students were sheltered in place after the leak was discovered and LAFD and Department of Public Utilities crews are at the scene.

Fall Prescribed Burn Planned On 818 Acres Of Valles Caldera National Preserve

VCNP News:

JEMEZ SPRINGS – The Valles Caldera Trust is planning to implement a prescribed burn project that may begin as early as Tuesday, Oct. 14 and last for two to four days.

If conditions are not right next week, the burn may occur later in the season. The prescribed burn will be on 818 acres of the Valles Caldera National Preserve, north of N.M. 4 in the Banco Bonito area near mile marker 30. Because of the location and elevation, smoke from the burn will be visible from all directions coming into the Jemez Mountains area. Smoke will linger a few days after the burn. Community Meeting to Discuss Paliza Prescribed Fire

Conditions may be favorable later this week for fire managers to begin the Paliza prescribed fire near the community of Ponderosa on Santa Fe National Forest’s Jemez Ranger District.

Santa Fe Watershed Prescribed Burn Postponed

SFNF News:

 SANTA FE – Fire managers from Santa Fe National Forest’s Espanola Ranger District have postponed the Santa Fe Watershed prescribed fire that was scheduled for ignition this week. 

The Southwest Coordination Center and the Weather Predictive Service have predicted that remnants of former Hurricane Odile will bring significant moisture and poor ventilation through the end of this week and possibly into next week. Weather conditions such as wind, temperature and humidity must meet specific criteria before any prescribed fire can be implemented.

Espanola Fire District Plans Controlled Burn

FOREST SERVICE News:

SANTA FE–Fire managers from Santa Fe National Forest’s Espanola Ranger District have been working with the support of the City of Santa Fe, the Nature Conservancy, the Santa Fe Watershed Association, and New Mexico State Forestry to develop a long-term plan to improve forest health in the Santa Fe Municipal Watershed.  Several fuel reduction treatments have been completed to date and another prescribed fire will be conducted as soon as weather conditions are favorable, perhaps as early as next week.
