SFNF Issues Closure Order For Cerro Pelado Fire

SFNF News: 

SANTA FE – The Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) has issued a closure order to protect public health and safety during fire operations on the Cerro Pelado Fire.

The order is effective immediately and through Dec. 31, 2022, unless rescinded earlier.

The Cerro Pelado Fire started April 22 about 7 miles east of Jemez Springs on the Jemez Ranger District. The cause is under investigation. Governor Signs Emergency Declaration For Mora County

STATE News:

SANTA FE — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed an executive order declaring a state of emergency in Mora County Saturday, making funding and state resources available for communities battling ongoing wildfires.

The emergency declaration follows similar declarations yesterday for Colfax, Lincoln, San Miguel and Valencia Counties.

New Mexico Governor Urges Local Restrictions On Fireworks Due To Wildfires, Drought Conditions

STATE News:

SANTA FE — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed an executive order Monday urging New Mexico municipalities and counties to ban the retail sale of fireworks in their communities.

The request for additional preventative action comes as numerous wildfires burn throughout New Mexico and severe drought conditions persist across the state.

The Cerro Pelado Fire started the afternoon of Friday, April 22, and is burning south of Valles Caldera National Preserve in the Santa Fe National Forest. The park is CLOSED until further notice due to the proximity of the fire, ongoing firefighting efforts, upcoming weather events, and the closure of N.M. 4.

Cerro Pelado Fire Grows To 4,688 Acres, Remains 0 Percent Contained, More People And Equipment Have Been Ordered

The Cerro Pelado Fire, 7 miles east of Jemez Springs started Friday, April 22 during an epic wind event. It has consumed 4,688 acres and remains zero percent contained.

Today firefighters are taking advantage of the good weather to make progress on the fire. They will continue to protect structures near the fire, including the Sierra de Los Pinos and Cochiti Mesa communities.

Helicopters also will fly reconnaissance missions today over the fire assessing behavior and dropping water. Firefighters will continue to construct hand line to protect the Sierra de Los Pinos community. Read More

The United State Department of Agriculture (USDA) released the following information this afternoon on the status of the Cerro Pelado Fire burning in the Jemez Mountains:

The Cerro Pelado Fire, 7 miles east of Jemez Springs, started Friday, April 22, during an epic wind event. The cause of the fire is under investigation. It is burning in ponderosa pine and mixed conifer trees and brush.

Fort Union National Monument Closed Due To Area Fires

WATROUS – The National Park Service has announced that Fort Union National Monument is closed today and Monday, due to fire activity in the area and heavy smoke from those fires.

Road closures surrounding the park and the uncertainty of evacuations in surrounding areas will make access to the park difficult for park staff as well as the public; therefore, park management has made the decision to not open the park to the public for the next two days.

Conditions will be re-assessed Monday and decisions made moving forward based on current conditions.
