Valles Caldera Continues Winter Prescribed Burns

NPS News:

JEMEZ SPRINGS — The National Park Service will continue winter prescribed burn projects Tuesday, Feb. 8 in the Valles Caldera National Preserve by burning piles of previously thinned materials on San Antonio Mountain.

This is the second of five areas around the preserve where burn piles have been prepared. The operation is expected to take several days to complete. The purpose is to reduce hazardous fuels and the chance for future high-intensity wildfires.

Bandelier Plans Winter Prescribed Burn

BANDELIER News:

The National Park Service plans to implement a prescribed fire in Bandelier National Monument starting as early as Feb. 10, continuing through until completion if conditions are favorable.

The prescribed burn will occur in previously thinned areas where materials have been piled for burning. The pile burn operation is expected to take one day depending on weather and fuel conditions.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, nearly half (48 percent) of home heating equipment fires are reported during the months of December, January and February.
