SFNF May Implement Gallinas Prescribed Pile Burn Monday

SANTA FE — Fire managers on the Pecos/Las Vegas District of the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) hope to implement the previously announced Gallinas Canyon wildland-urban interface (WUI) prescribed pile burn Monday, Jan. 10.

The decision to proceed will depend on multiple factors, including snowpack, fuel moisture levels, air quality, ventilation, forecasted weather and wind, and resource availability.

Winter Prescribed Burns Underway At Valles Caldera National Preserve

NPS News:

JEMEZ SPRINGS — The National Park Service (NPS) will begin today the prescribed burn projects in Valles Caldera National Preserve by burning piles of previously thinned materials in the Cerro Seco area.

This is the first of five areas around the preserve where burn piles have been prepared. The operation is expected to take a few days to complete.

The purpose is to reduce hazardous fuels and the chance for future high-intensity wildfires.

The Los Alamos County Fire Marshal’s Office has issued an open burn permit to the Pajarito Mountain Ski Area operators to perform pile burning for the Jan. 6-20 timeframe.

Burning will only be conducted if outlined permit criteria and certain weather conditions are present to allow for safe activity. As a result, smoke may be visible from surrounding areas.

BLM Continues Prescribed Fire Operations Near San Pedro

BLM News:

TAOS — The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Taos Field Office will continue prescribed burn operations near San Pedro throughout the month of January.

The agency began burn operations in November with the intent to burn up to 200 acres near San Pedro in two units. The first unit is on BLM-managed lands in Santa Fe County on the south side of NM Highway 344, approximately one mile east of NM Highway 14 and NM Highway 344.

The second unit on Verbina Road was completed during the November burn operations. This location is on lands managed by the State of New Mexico to the east of the first unit.

Friday Night Fire Burns Barn At Los Luceros Historic Site

ALCALDE – The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) has announced that a barn caught fire Friday evening at Los Luceros Historic Site.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, has called on state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate fires set at an Albuquerque mosque as a possible hate crime.
