Letter To The Editor: Symbolism On The White Rock ‘Rock’

By WALTER TUZEL
Los Alamos

The swastika is a holy Hindu and Buddhist symbol used by Hitler for his evil mission. In Hinduism it’s associated with Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and is considered an embodiment of prosperity and good fortune. In Buddhism signifies the Buddha’s footsteps.

If people are allowed to post messages on this White Rock (rock), then there is nothing wrong in posting Asians’ symbols. Read More

Letter To The Editor: Buyer Beware – The Lensic

By JIM LAKE
White Rock

On April 19,2024 I went to the Lensic theater in Santa Fe to see Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, a brilliant young blues guitar player. I purchased 3rd row tickets so I would be able to see his finger work on the guitar. Much to my dismay there was a metal barrier a little lower than chest high in front of the stage and people were standing there waiting for the concert to start. When I asked security (security is something I have never seen at the Lensic) I was told they didn’t have seats and paid extra to watch the concert from there. This made it very difficult to see the performance from Read More

Letter To The Editor: Concern Over DPU’s Proposed Solar Reimbursement Changes

By PATRICIA ROBERTS MCCULLOCH
White Rock

To whom it may concern, my husband and I installed solar panels approximately 6 years ago on our home in White Rock. At the time we signed a contract with the county stating the specifics of how the solar would be reimbursed to us each month.

We installed our panels with a large out-of-pocket cost, which we are still paying off, with the understanding that we would be investing for the future and benefiting the environment by producing green electricity and also receiving a monthly credit on our utility bill, thus keeping down utility costs.

We would not have Read More

Letter To The Editor: Concern Over DPU Proposed Solar Rate Change

By COLEEN MEYER
Los Alamos

The rate change being voted on by the Board of Public Utilities (BPU) (Wednesday, April 17) is substantially more than indicated in the County News bulletin published by the Los Alamos Daily Post last week (https://ladptest2.ortizaudio.net/dpu-proposed-solar-rule-changes-heading-to-bpu/).

Is this an end to the principle of net metering?

I am not an electrician, but my understanding of permitting in Los Alamos County is that the electricity produced by PV panels goes to the LA Utility, not directly to my appliances. I then draw from the LA Utility, hence the 2 Read More

Letter To The Editor: Response To Paige Knight On New Mexico Tax System

By RICK NEBEL
Los Alamos

This is a response to Ms. Paige Knight’s recent article in the Post where she told us how progressive and equitable our NM Tax system is.

A mainstay of the NM taxing system is the Gross Receipts Tax. This is an inherently regressive tax, not a progressive one. As I pointed out in a previous letter (link), it is also inequitable in that it discriminates against New Mexico businesses in favor of out of state businesses (as I explained in a previous letter).

My question to Ms. Knight is how can you call yourself a progressive when you apparently think this type of taxation is just Read More

Letter To The Editor: We Are So Pleased With Los Alamos Cooperative Market!

By RONALIE A. MOSS
Los Alamos
Recently we hosted an 80th birthday party for my special day. The Los Alamos Cooperative Market (Co-op) catered our event. The food was fresh and delicious, ready when we asked it to be for pick-up, and packaged thoughtfully.
I am gluten free, and several friends have special food requirements. We were able to accommodate all of them easily due to the careful attention to detail of the kitchen staff.
We served 45 people over a several hour period thanks to dishes that could be heated in turns. People loved the chicken enchiladas, beef dishes, and vegetarian selections.

Letter To The Editor: This Earth Day, Give Your Support To Los Alamos’ Youth Climate Advocates

By SARA ANN MASON
Los Alamos

I know I’m not the only Los Alamosan who is troubled about what the short- and long-term future holds as we head into another increasingly long wildfire season. A fall 2023 survey found that roughly 7 out of every 10 New Mexicans recognize that climate change is happening and is harming plants, animals, and future generations.

The good news is that there are actions we can all take to create the livable future we want for us and our future generations:

There are local initiatives focused on reducing Los Alamos’ contribution to carbon pollution that we can participate in. Read More

Letter To The Editor: Response To ‘The Time To Act Is Now!’

By STEPHEN J. MOSIER
Los Alamos

In response to ‘The Time To Act Is Now!’ published April 4, 2024 (Link)

If the County truly wishes to reduce waste, it could start with its contract with Cascadia in regards to our Climate Action Plan. The nearly-empty Council chambers certainly do not attest to the community agreeing with their assessment that climate change poses an existential threat to our community. This is understandable, given that the assertion is patently ridiculous.

There is no possible worst-case scenario for Los Alamos in terms of climate change which would be worse than the costs of Read More
