Letter To The Editor: Beautiful Segler Painting On APPB Agenda This Thursday June 27!

By IRENE POWELL
Los Alamos

Dear citizens of Los Alamos,

Just found out the purchase of the beautiful 24”x30” painting, “The Boys of Pajarito Plateau” by artist Jeff Segler will be discussed at the Art in Public Places Advisory Board (APPB) at 5:30 p.m. this Thursday in Room 110 at the Municipal Building.

This has been brought before the County Council off and on for years! Council members say they need the approval of this board, whose 4-5 members cannot decide. Even though it “captures a part of our history for future generations” (from the APPB mission statement).

I encourage all citizens of Los Read More

Letter To The Editor: Disappointed In DEI Probe At LAPS

By MATTHEW GRAY
Los Alamos

I am a parent of a LAHS student and would like to say that I am disappointed in the outcome of the recent assessment conducted at LAPS concerning the DEI complaints in the Daniels case. To say there were no substantiated claims is concerning, considering what has transpired and what I have witnessed since I’ve been here. Since moving to Los Alamos three years ago, my family has experienced some questionable behavior and seemingly unfair practices at LAHS, and I have addressed it with multiple levels of LAPS leadership.

There have been times when I felt patronized or that Read More

Letter To The Editor: Yet Another Water Main Break Or Leak!

By VALARIE PRESTWOOD
Los Alamos
Yet another water main break or leak! I’ve lost count how many times this has occurred in the recent past. This time, it was in my North Mesa neighborhood and happened in the early morning hours of June 7, 2024.
This is a plea to our County management and County Council that you stop putting money into new projects (such as the, very costly, urban trail system) and concentrate on our old, often breaking or failing, infrastructure.

Letter To The Editor: Opinion On Trump Trial

WILLIAM C. MEAD
Los Alamos

Judge Aileen M. Cannon is making the Donald J. Trump classified documents case into a circus. She has allowed Trump’s lawyers to raise endless, spurious issues and failed to make timely judgements.

If criminal charges are brought, do not the citizens of the USA (both the accused and the other 330,000,000+ of us) have a right to a trial within a reasonable length of time? Or does the accused have the right to delay the trial forever with innumerable, irrelevant questions? Is there no limit to the scope of questions that the defense can raise?

If the President is above the law Read More

Letter To Editor: LALT Thanks Community For Great Season

By KELLY DOLEJSI
Los Alamos

Thank you to the Los Alamos Little Theatre community for another great season! Without such dedicated and enthusiastic audiences, we’d have no theater. Thank you as well to the many local organizations that supported LALT’s productions, including Dance Arts Los Alamos, Los Alamos Daily Post, Los Alamos Reporter, Aspen Copies and many others. These organizations and dozens of individual volunteers worked to make this season’s shows professional and fabulous theatrical events.

This year, the Little Theatre brought several fantastic productions to the Hill. Read More

Letter To The Editor: Great Electric Cars At Low Cost? Yes!

By TYLER TAYLOR
Santa Fe

There has been a bit of recent heartburn because electric vehicles that sell for $5,000 – $10,000 in China will soon face a 100% U.S. tariff. The unhappiness seems to come from a belief that a high-quality EV can only be had in America today for $35,000 – $100,000. But I’ve got great news: that assumption is completely wrong!

I want to share my recent experience with getting a very nice EV for a net price of $14,000. Realizing that a) 98% of my trips are less than 125 miles and b) buying used EVs older than 2023 can produce a $4000 tax credit, I bought online a 2022 Nissan Leaf SV. It had Read More

Letter To The Editor: Sala Partnership

By MARCIA LUCAS
White Rock resident for decades

I am disappointed, but not surprised, to learn that once again, County Staff are the bottleneck in a process to improve the quality of life in Los Alamos. Time and time again I hear from friends who own businesses in our town how they cannot improve their business because County Staff get in the way.

If Mr. Saenz were to take his ideas to a banker (using the term generically) you better believe said banker would weigh the pros and cons, the benefits and the risks, to his bank and would offer consideration. The petitioner would know promptly what obstacles Read More

Letter To The Editor: Dense-Breasted Women Of New Mexico, Rejoice!

By KATIE BRUELL
Los Alamos

For years we’ve gone to our regular mammogram appointments (preventive medicine, covered 100% by our health insurance) only to be told, “You have (radiographically) dense breast tissue. We can’t really say whether or not you are developing breast cancer without a breast ultrasound.” Then we turn to our health insurance, which tells us, “A breast ultrasound is diagnostic, not preventive, so you’ll need to pay out of pocket for that.” Many of us don’t have the thousands of dollars a breast ultrasound costs, so we’ve been left wondering–is there cancer developing? Would Read More

Letter To The Letter: About The Importance Of Symbolism And Freedom Of Expression

By FRANCESCO CARAVELLI
Los Alamos

This is a response to Walter Tuzel’s letter (link), with whom I agree about the importance of symbolism and freedom of expression.

It is crucial, however, to differentiate between the original symbols of Buddhism, depicted as either a 90-degree left-facing swastika or a 90-degree right-facing swastika, which holds significance in various Buddhist subcultures.

The 45-degree right-facing swastika which appeared in White Rock, from somebody who at least knew how to use Google, has been co-opted as a symbol of Nazism, full stop.

Therefore, the presence of Read More

Letter To The Editor: Thoughts About Utility-Scale Solar

By RICHARD NEBEL
Los Alamos

This is a response to Steve Tobin’s recent OP/ED in the Post and the Reporter along with David North’s recent letter in the Reporter on Utility-Scale solar. First of all, I think Steve Tobin is right that the first thing a homeowner should try to do is to electrify their home, add an EV and then consider whether they want to generate their own power. Rooftop Solar (RTS) is not a good solution for everyone, and some homes simply are not suited for it.

Our business went emissions-free in January 2020. We did this with a combination of Solar PV and a heat pump. We did the same thing Read More
