Letter To The Editor: Thank You Mr. Chandler

By LYNN HANRAHAN
Los Alamos

Thank you Mr. Chandler for keeping us up to date about what our County is considering regarding ADUs. You can already hear the cries of NIMBY in certain political circles who believe any development is good. But take a walk around your neighborhood and take a deep breath.

I might be mistaken but didn’t the modern nuisance issue grow out of the efforts of a local realtor on Walnut Street about twenty years ago trying to clean up (gentrify) the neighborhood a bit? A close neighbor of hers ran a business out of their home which required them to have lots of vehicles – they took up Read More

Letter To The Editor: Lisa Shin’s Distractions

By AARON WALKER
White Rock

This letter is in response to the recent letter by Lisa Shin “Where Candidates Stand on the Nuisance Code” (Link).

To be blunt and to the point: her letter is fearmongering and distraction techniques. The Republicans have had a rough couple of days in the papers, and this is a poor attempt to pivot away from that.

Let’s start with the distraction tactic. Gary Stradling has been in the papers recently for his abhorrent comments regarding migrant workers and the way in which he talked down to the facilitator asking the questions. He even offered a “sorry you were offended” Read More

Letter To The Editor: We Must Rally Against Racism

By Concerned LAPS Parents and Los Alamos Residents
Names Listed Below

We are deeply concerned about recent racist behavior witnessed at Los Alamos Public schools and addressed by Dr. Jose Delfin, LAPS superintendent, in an email on Oct. 21 (link). No matter how unintentional, there is no excuse for racist overtones or openly racist behavior, by students or adults alike. We, as citizens of this small town, must rally around anti-racism efforts – both in the schools and in the greater community.

This is not about politics. This is about speaking up and having zero tolerance for bigotry toward Read More

Letter To The Editor: Dumping Elk Parts On Trail Not Okay

By SCOTT RICHMOND
White Rock Resident and Trail User
I took my dogs out for a walk this morning only to find that someone had “de-boned” an elk and dumped the unwanted parts at a popular White Rock trailhead. There is no hunting for many miles around this trail, so I was very surprised. It is DOE and laboratory property on either side of State Road 4.
I called the laboratory’s Emergency Operation Center and they told me that they were not concerned, and so, I then called the Los Alamos Police Department non-emergency number (dispatch). Dispatch contacted an officer who said it might be a concern for game

Letter To The Editor: Reelect Randall Ryti

By GRANT HARDING
Los Alamos

I’m writing to declare my endorsement for Randall (Randy) Ryti for County Council.

A number of people have made compelling arguments in their endorsements. With my endorsement, I would like to focus on some specifics I believe have the greatest impact to the future of this county.

When some of Randy’s fellow Councilors were weary of public comments that were critical of their actions, they sought to weaponize civility and limit public comment during Council meetings. Chair Ryti resisted their neoliberal impulses and allowed public comment to carry on even if it Read More

Letter To The Editor: Vote For Randall Ryti

By Julie and Aaron Walker
White Rock

Randall Ryti is the current chair of the County Council and is running for re-election. We will be happily casting our vote for him, and we encourage others to do the same. He has the experience on Council that is needed and has shown a willingness to listen to public input.

We don’t always agree with the decisions Councilor Ryti makes. We would be a little worried if we agreed with someone 100 percent of the time. What makes us happy to cast our vote for Randall in this instance is his willingness to discuss issues, no matter which side he is on. We have talked to Randall Read More

Letter To The Editor: Open Letter To David Izraelevitz

By MIKE DEMPSEY
White Rock

Dear David Izraelevitz,

If you don’t read more than the first six bullets of this letter, that’s OK.

Here is what you need to know:

  1. Energy is the ONLY currency. Whoever controls your energy supply controls you, and your babies.  And your babies, babies.
  2. Energy transitions take multiples of decades, and we have just barely started. Making unreasonable and arbitrary deadlines helps nobody. See Item 1.
  3. 100 years ago in 1919 the USDA census of draft animals (horse & mules) peaked at 20 million head. 1/3rd of all US agriculture was devoted to draft animal feed. That was

Letter To The Editor: Voting For Suzie Haveman

CHICK AND YVONNE KELLER
Los Alamos

Yvonne and I would like to share why we will vote for Suzie Haveman for County Council.

Suzie is a bright penny, down to earth, but often very original in solving problems. Having worked for years in Los Alamos real estate, she understands the economics of our town, its strengths and challenges. She however is also interested in preserving our environment and supported the creation of the Los Alamos Nature Center.

Recently she also worked on the Los Alamos County Energy and Sustainability Task Force. A lifelong resident, Suzie understands our County and works Read More

Letter To The Editor: True Virtue Vs. Virtue Signaling

By DAVID IZRAELEVITZ
Los Alamos County Councilor
With all due respect to my fellow councilor, I was extremely disappointed by David Reagor’s recent letter of endorsement of his fellow Republican candidates for Council. It is fine to highlight the qualities of candidates he endorses, but his letter distorted both the recommendations of the Los Alamos Resiliency, Energy, And Sustainability (LARES) Task Force, as well as the position of the Democratic candidates toward a more environmentally responsible future for Los Alamos.
In my conversations with Theresa Cull, Melanee Hand, Suzie Havemann

Letter To The Editor: Candidates’ Values

By REID PRIEDHORSKY
Los Alamos

Candidates’ values matter because we are entrusting big decisions to their judgement.

In my view, an especially important value is: Does the candidate believe in democracy? A recent letter by Hanson and Skolnik asked two highly informative questions on this matter, i.e., did Joe Biden win the 2020 election fairly and was there an insurrection at the Capitol Jan. 6, 2021. The correct answers are yes and yes, and any other answers are inconsistent with belief in democracy.

All four Democratic candidates for Council (Cull, Hand, Havemann, and Ryti) answered yes Read More
