Letter To The Editor: Closure Of Los Alamos County Open Space

By STEVEN RENEAU
White Rock

When the U.S. Forest Service announced the closures of the Santa Fe, Carson, and much of the Cibola National Forests, I was pleased to see our Senator, Martin Heinrich, offering a different perspective.

Understanding the importance of recreational access to public lands to New Mexicans, he asked the Forest Service to reconsider their blanket closures. While he acknowledged the value of certain actions including prohibiting campfires, barbecues, and overnight use, he questioned the need to prohibit all day use in areas like the Sandia foothills next to Albuquerque. Letter To The Editor: In Support Of Community Composting

By JULIA YING
Los Alamos

I’m writing in support of the letters to the editor from Jodi Benson and Katie Leonard May 17 in support of a community composting program.

The Environmental Sustainability Board in Los Alamos’ comprehensive feasibility study to the Los Alamos Council May 17 recommends: (1) Residents to have access to food waste collection at drop-off site(s), and (2) businesses to have curbside food waste pick up, much like trash, recycling, and yard waste.

As a Los Alamos resident living in an apartment, I would greatly value such a food composting program. At present, I freeze my food Read More

Letter To The Editor: In Support Of Community Composting

By KATIE LEORNARD
Los Alamos

The LA County’s Environmental Sustainability Board has completed its composting feasibility study and has will be recommending to the County Council to proceed in the following ways:

(1) Residents will have access to a compost drop-off site, and (2) businesses will have curbside compost pick up, much like trash, recycling, and yard waste.

A compost drop-off site for residents (as opposed to curbside pickup) will reduce the number of animals that are attracted to the decomposing waste in neighborhoods while still allowing these fruit/veggie scraps to stay out

Letter To The Editor: Tonight – Tell County Council To Initiate Long-Studied County-Wide Food-Waste Composting System

By JODY BENSON
Los Alamos

At tonight’s Council Meeting, the County will decide whether to approve what has been a years-long study to establish community food-waste composting.

Here’s what could happen:

Rather than tossing scraps and uneaten food into the dumpster to rot into methane to contribute to yet more never-ending holocaust fires incinerating our entire state, all that luscious, organic material could break down into rich and useful compost to augment our soils and create a habitat for all sorts of microorganisms and vegetables and flowers and shrubs and trees. Free. Rich, delicious, Read More

Letter To The Editor: Attorney General Candidates

By KARYL ANN ARMBRUSTER
Former Commissioner
NM Public Education District 4

Once again, the Democrats have two outstanding candidates for Attorney General, but one stands out for my vote.

In 2009-2010 I worked closely with current State Auditor, Brian Colon and Lt. Gov. Diane Denish in an election they did not win. I was running Labor 2010 for AFT, and I, along with the other Labor Unions worked to get candidates elected. Senators Heinrich and Lujan (as a congressman) were two successes. I have worked closely with Brian several times in the last 12 years.

That 2010 election taught me a few things. Read More

Letter To The Editor: Women Should Vote

By CAMILLE MORRISON
Los Alamos

The Bible and the Constitution are both subject to interpretation. The XIX Amendment to the Constitution is not.

It says: The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

We cannot do anything about the Supreme Court but if every woman votes we can do something about Congress, Governors and State Legislatures. It is more important than ever for every eligible woman to vote this year. Read More

Letter To The Editor: Photograph Walls And Rooms

By ROY CHRISTENSEN
Los Alamos resident 1952-1983

Thank you Daily Post for great coverage and pictures of the New Mexico fires.

Two of my former homes in Los Alamos were lost to fires and a cabin in the Jemez escaped two other fires in that area. A third home had severe smoke damage and loss of power caused loss of food.

A prudent suggestion, people should take pictures of each wall and contents in each room to help remind themselves if they have a loss. You remember things after you have settled with the insurance companies. Read More

Letter To The Editor: RE: Improve Election Security

By TOM HILL
Los Alamos

Regarding the recent Letter To The Editor to “Improve Election Security” (link):

I, too, would encourage citizens to view the Dinesh D’Souza film “2000 Mules”. It is a hoot.

The author of the letter asserts that it offers “indisputable evidence of massive ballot stuffing in the 2020 election”.

I would then encourage our citizens to read the recent article in the Washington Post by Philip Bump on the “2000 Mules” movie. And then re-watch the movie and draw their own conclusions as to just how “indisputable” this evidence is.

She labels “True The Vote” as a “non-partisan group”. Read More

Letter To The Editor: Response To Valerie Shelley … From Romeo To Footloose

By CHARLIE STRAUSS
Los Alamos
Ya got trouble in River City!  Not in the pool hall of The Music Man, but right here in Los Alamos. LAHS kids might put on a dance show … and you know what dancing leads to.
I found myself bemused by Valerie Shelley’s exquisite channeling of the stoggy villains in Footloose — Americans of all ages rooted for the dancing kids to have it over on the stiff prudes in that hit movie.  Harper Valley PTA‘s have always worried about Elvis and the Beatles corrupting our youth with shaking hips. You can bite into her delicious wrath here, here, and here.
A quick trip

Letter To The Editor: Safely Reopening Schools

By RICHARD SKOLNIK
Los Alamos

Everyone in Los Alamos is pre-occupied with the fire. Most people in Los Alamos are also “done with COVID.”

Nonetheless, families with school age children in Los Alamos County need to understand that schools will reopen next week in the face of seven weeks of increasing rates of COVID infections in Los Alamos and several weeks of increasing infections among students and staff, as well. In fact, the rate of infection is now as high as almost any time other than the Omicron “surge.” In addition, CDC has just moved Los Alamos from its “Low” to its “Medium” category for COVID. Read More
