Letter To The Editor: Improve Election Security

By WENDY ANN KREUTZ CLAYTON
Los Alamos

I would like our county to improve election security by getting rid of vulnerable and unnecessary ballot drop boxes.

Over the weekend I watched Dinesh D’Souza’s film “2000 Mules which presented indisputable evidence of massive ballot stuffing during the 2020 election.

The film highlights the investigative work done by the non-partisan group, TrueTheVote, who used cellphone tracking and video surveillance that shows extensive unlawful gathering and delivering of thousands of absentee ballots in real time by paid ‘mules’.

I was shocked and angered Read More

Letter To The Editor: LAPS & LAHS Administrators OK Degrading Choral Number Unsuitable For Families

By VALERIE SHELLEY
Los Alamos

The choral/dance performance of “The Cell Block Tango” will be included in the re-scheduled May 18 LAHS choir concert.

This letter is a warning to families that the content of the show will not be family friendly.  The song/dance “The Cell Block Tango” is rated for ages over 13.

Despite the objections of those critical of the song’s glorification of domestic abuse, the choir director and administrators have anticipated that fury from some of the students and their parents should they be denied the opportunity to perform this piece would be too great to cancel the Read More

Letter To The Editor: We’re Unaware Of How Democracy Is Designed To Work

By J. TAUB
Santa Fe
Formerly of Los Alamos

Millions are ignorant and gullible, unaware of how our democracy is designed to work because it’s not required learning for ALL of our children.

Corporations are redefined as ‘people’ (multi-headed apparently) resulting in money, not people, as decider of elections while citizens are prevented from voting.

Policy becomes infused with fundamentalist religious positions, once again defining women as incapable, second class entities. A discriminatory governmental presidential election loophole is ignored by the Party it defeats every time it’s Read More

Letter To The Editor: LAHS Bel Canto Choir Slated To Perform Song With Blatant Bigotry And Glorified Violence … We Must Do Better

By VALERIE SHELLEY
Los Alamos

The Los Alamos High School (LAHS) Bel Canto Choir will be singing the song “The Cell Block Tango” from the musical play “Chicago” in its upcoming performance May 11 and possibly May 12 .

This song is about five murderesses and how they killed their victims. There are five verses and the students will be singing about shooting someone in the head, poisoning a victim, stabbing a person 10 times, and about an individual blacking out and then awakening to find two people dead with blood on their hands.

Surely the numerous incidences of violence in the schools nationwide, Read More

Letter To The Editor: In Support Of Senior Appreciation Night

By NATHAN DELGADO
Los Alamos

When I first heard about Senior Appreciation Night (SAN), I didn’t know what to expect.

Could Los Alamos do anything exciting? But there wasn’t much else to do on the final weekend of the school year. And it seemed like every other student was going to be there. After arriving, any doubts I had quickly dissipated. After over 30 years of SAN, the intrepid group running the show has figured out a winning formula.

As a 2016 LAHS graduate who enjoyed the heck out of my Senior Appreciation Night, I’m writing today to encourage the community to support the event and keep Read More

Letter To The Editor: Pueblo Canyon Trails Master Plan – 7 Mile Route Input

By ROBIN GURULE
Los Alamos

I support having an accessible bike trail down Pueblo Canyon. However, the placement is critical, and Acid Canyon is a particularly poor choice for a beginner bike trail.

The critical wildlife areas of Pueblo and Acid Canyons are steep-walled, which provide shade and forces some water to the surface, allowing willows and other riparian shrubs to flourish, which in turn attract wildlife. Acid and Pueblo Canyons have some of the only remaining examples of this type of habitat in Los Alamos County; since upper Los Alamos Canyon, Guaje Canyon, Upper Pajarito Canyon, Valle Read More

Letter To The Editor: PEEC Shares Concerns About Community Services New Trails Proposal

By KATHERINE BRUELL
Executive Director
PEEC Board of Directors
PEEC Staff

As the PEEC Board and Staff, we’re thrilled that Community Services is proposing new trails that will allow more people to enjoy and connect with nature. Mountain biking is an important and popular way for people to get outside these days, which is why we are on our second year of offering a youth mountain bike camp in the summer.

We are also committed to protecting nature, especially natural habitat for threatened and endangered species. And we are always concerned for people’s safety in the outdoors, and work hard to mitigate Read More

Letter To The Editor: Living With Wildfire

By MARK DEVOLDER
Los Alamos

Last night, I heard a portion of the presentation on the Cerro Pelado Fire as well as the new (smaller) fire near Thompson Ridge. The fires are occurring very early in the fire season. In addition, there is the potential for lightning-caused fires until the beginning of the monsoon season in a couple of months. We are in the middle of a drought and need to be concerned not only about this year but next year as  well.

There is much the Los Alamos County community (that is, Los Alamos and White Rock) can do at this time to prepare if the situation becomes worse.

The following Read More

Letter To The Editor: Opinion On Proposed Mountain Bike Trail

By PALLAS PAPIN
Los Alamos

I am writing to express my opposition to the proposed Mountain Bike Flow Trail/NICA competitive race trail and to raise concerns about the mountain bike skills park.

I don’t think Los Alamos County should promote a sport that is incompatible with the current use. As a frequent user of our wonderful trail system I routinely meet other hikers, joggers, dog walkers, bird watchers and on rare occasions a mountain biker.

Despite the infrequency of mountain bikers on our trails, I do see the damage they cause. Mountain bikes create ruts in the trails, and this makes erosion Read More

Letter To The Editor: Power Outages

By JOHN E. PEARSON
Los Alamos

Today’s weather forecast (April 22) for Los Alamos County is for power outages.

Isn’t that weird? We get a little wind and out goes the power? This will be the 3rd time in two years.

I propose that we put all our power lines underground. It will cost a little money but with horizontal drilling I’m confident one of the wealthiest counties in the country will manage to afford it.

While we’re running underground power lines to every house the cost of simultaneously running fiber optic cables in addition will be marginal so let’s do both. County utilities run internet service Read More
