Letter To The Editor: This Earth Day, You Can Start Building The Political Will For A Livable World

By SARA ANN MASON
Los Alamos

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s recent report makes one thing clear: we have many options at our disposal to make significant reductions in carbon emissions.

So, what’s the holdup? As Dana Nuccitelli observed writing for Yale Climate Connections, the missing ingredient is political will. (1)

And that’s where you come in. Building political will is not an abstract concept, and it’s not something best left to a more powerful and influential person. It’s something you can start doing today through one simple action: reach out to your members Read More

Letter To The Editor: Appoint Aaron Walker To Council

By GRANT HARDING
Los Alamos

For a second time in a few months I have the pleasure of endorsing Aaron Walker for appointment to fill a vacant seat on Council.

My previous endorsement was as follows:

“Aaron Walker has demonstrated the willingness to dive deeply into complex and contentious issues, while listening to all the stakeholders to understand their needs and concerns. In his positions as member, Chair, then Vice Chair on CDAB, he’s shown the ability to think outside the box to offer up solutions people with widely differing political ideologies can agree with. He’s consistently Read More

Letter To The Editor: Select My Son Keith Lepsch To Fill Empty Council Seat

By DON LEPSCH
Los Alamos

Dear Council Members:

You might not be surprised that I am writing to you suggesting you select my son to fill the empty council seat.

I am his father … you might ask how we come to be in Los Alamos. My wife, Priscilla, and I were in our retirement home in Charlottesville VA helping Keith’s brother raise his two 11 and 13 year old children. When Keith and his lovely wife Carolina said they were going to have a baby and can we come and help. Of course we said yes! We sold our house, packed up the truck and never looked back except through tears for leaving the other half of the family. That Read More

Letter To The Editor: Endorsing A New Background And Perspective For Council

By PHILIP GURSKY
Los Alamos

I am pleased to be able to take this opportunity to endorse and recommend that on April 5th, the Council appoint Keith Lepsch to fill the current vacancy on County Council.

I first met Keith about a decade ago, as Board Members on the Los Alamos Heart Council, of which I am President. Keith provided a welcome thoughtfulness, medical practice experience perspective and willingness to volunteer to get done whatever was necessary.

Keith is currently a flight nurse for Classic Air Medical, the medical helicopter service here. He began working in Los Alamos in 2007 and moved Read More

Letter To The Editor: Serving Community Needs And The Reel Deal Theater

By STEPHEN LEDOUX
Local author
Professor Emeritus of Behaviorology
(the natural science of behavior)
SUNY

The question of how to handle the Reel Deal Theater has made it around the block several times now, most recently in the articles in the Los Alamos Daily Post by Rebecca Li and by Ron Moses. As indicated or implied by their views (shared by many, young and old like them) traditional approaches to the question remain unsuccessful in providing answers.

That kind of conundrum has faced most local governments many times, and the answer may reside in breaking some relatively new ground, something Read More

Letter To The Editor: PEEC & Katie Bruell

By SCOTT WATSON
Jemez Springs

I would like to take a moment to thank Katherine Bruell, and her staff at PEEC, for their work serving the community.

Katie’s service as the first executive director saw a difficult, and decade-long transition from what was basically a club into the multi-faceted environmental education center and new landmark building that we all enjoy today.

It is through such service that our communities are built and our environments are transformed for the better.

Well done. Read More

Letter To The Editor: Dissatisfied With Status Quo In Town

By REID PRIEDHORSKY
Los Alamos

Dear members of the community:

With Los Alamos County leadership having successfully driven another small business (Automotive Professionals) out of town along with both of its owners including a sitting county councilor (Sean Williams), and maybe on the verge of driving youth sports out of town as well, it seems to me a good time to recall that councilor’s comments from last July. He opposed the appointment of the current county manager, expressing concerns about the “status quo”.

I too am greatly dissatisfied with the status quo in this town. We have a total lack Read More

Letter To The Editor: Charging The Little League? – The County Must Enable, Not Disable

By RICHARD SKOLNIK
Los Alamos

The County’s recent decision to charge the Little League over $40,000 for using playing fields reminds us that the County needs to find new ways of doing business.

The County has found ways to subsidize businesses that “want to invest in Los Alamos.” It has done this most recently, for example, for businesses that have failed to honor their commitment to the arrangements made for such subsidies. In addition, the County offered these subsidies, including $1.8 million of land, on the basis of limited analysis of the economic costs and returns to the community and no Read More
