Letter To The Editor: To NMPED Secretary, Los Alamos School Board

By VALERIE FOX
Los Alamos Parent

To the Secretary of the New Mexico Public Education Department, Kurt Steinhaus and the Los Alamos School Board:

I am writing as a concerned parent and teacher regarding your (Mr. Steinhaus) most recent push to extend hours and the school year with the excuse of catching up kids that are 1-2 years behind.

I object to this notion, as it does not serve the best interests of children and their families and appears to be a decision driven by money. It also does not address the fact that this state has suffered long-term problems in learning due to a poor curriculum.

Letter To The Editor: Save The Reel Deal Theater

By RON MOSES
Fort Collins, Colo.
Formerly of Los Alamos

I am writing this as a former resident of Los Alamos who still maintains a strong interest in the viability of the Los Alamos community. My family and I spent 36 years in the city, the longest any of us has lived in one place. Although our nuclear family all now live in northern Colorado, we all periodically return to Los Alamos and maintain interest in and support of the community.

It is with these thoughts in mind that I write in support of retaining the Reel Deal Theater, as already commented on by Sandra Charles in the Los Alamos Daily Post (link Read More

Letter To The Editor: Dear Democratic Party, Where Are You?

By TJ TAUB
Los Alamos

As a Party, you have taken the foundation of our democracy for granted, enabling the Cult (formerly the Republican Party), right wing extremists and all manner of wingnuts to gain a frightening foothold in this country thanks, in great part, to social media and the lack of a strong voice from you instantly, clearly and continually challenging disinformation and divisive rhetoric.

Too many citizens don’t understand. Our form of government comes with responsibilities as well as freedoms! Only nine states require one year of U.S. government/civics, 30 require only one Read More

Letter To The Editor: Save The Real Deal Theater

By SANDRA CHARLES
Los Alamos

Thank you Rebecca Li for your letter to support keeping the Reel Deal as a theater.

When I read the county was considering converting it into a ‘tween center, I was appalled. That idea is so counter-intuitive when we look at the goals for how our future Los Alamos could evolve. If the theater is converted into something we do not really need, our town will just have to build another one in the near future!

If our teens and ‘tweens can’t bring themselves to share the existing center, then we could at least preserve the Reel Deal as a two- or three-screen theater, Read More

Letter To The Editor: Concern For Lighting Ordinance Change

By ELENA PEREZ
Los Alamos

An updated lighting ordinance has been proposed for the new Los Alamos County Development Code. The proposal has allowed for an increased upper color temperature of 3000K.

This means very bright lighting in residential areas. Some of our neighborhood lighting is aging and the replacements suggested are LEDs.

The Friends of the Night Sky, a group concerned with keeping our light pollution to a minimum, has had some input in the draft and favors a lower color temperature range, 2200K.

If you agree with the concept of dark skies, please voice your concern. Public input Read More

As parents, we are frustrated and deeply disappointed about the recent unanimous decision[1] by the LAPS board to make masks optional in school settings. As the governing body, the board is responsible for implementing policies that protect our children. Sadly, this decision failed to do so.

Letter To The Editor: Reject Council Action On LARES Requirements

By CHARLIE TRASK
Los Alamos

Los Alamos Council has adopted the radical “Green New Deal” promoted by socialist in Los Alamos. I am confident that the majority of Los Alamos Citizens would faint if they read and understand the impacts of this action.

I requested the Council to postpone the any action on the fatally flawed LARES Final Report, or better yet reject it entirely. It is a socialist dream document full of government overreach and control. Mother nature will not change because the County forces me to replace my gas fired heater and buy an electric car.

There’s no science -based data to substantiate Read More

Letter To The Editor: Shower Teachers With Love!

By JUDY MCKENZIE
Los Alamos

I personally look forward to opportunities to be involved in helping the schools because education and children are so important to me.

Now is your opportunity to give teachers something they want and need! Los Alamos Public Schools Foundation is having the Shower With Love campaign.

Teachers have created wish lists for their classrooms. These items will help them meet the needs of the children’s education. You can help by making a quick donation on the LAPS Foundation webpage. There you can view what specific teachers have on their list, or make a donation to a school Read More

Letter To The Editor: Water Problems

By KATHLEENE PARKER
White Rock

I read the Los Alamos Daily Post article on PEEC’s talk on being environmentally aware (link), I wondered if Los Alamos remembers why Sen. Gaylord Nelson (D.-Wisc.) founded Earth Day.

Or, perhaps, in terms of water, we in Los Alamos, despite our science, are busily ignoring—as is everyone in the Southwest–a major elephant in the room: our exploding human numbers!

That particularly matters during the worst 20-year drought in 1,200 years, and that is outside of any worsening of the water situation via climate change, with projections that the critical Colorado Read More

Letter To The Editor: Eliminate Unfair Double Taxation Of Our Social Security Benefits

By GREG and KATHIE LENNES
Las Cruces

Sorry – we disagree with former Sen. Fred Harris about the double taxation of social security (link).

We are not wealthy at all living on a very limited income with medical bills galore. Yet we are unnecessarily taxed hundreds of dollars more by the state. We make out our own taxes.

We say get rid of this idiotic tax.

We are on a limited income and not wealthy. We have been mad as hell about the double taxation on our Social Security benefits for years. This grievous betrayal of New Mexicans occurred in 1990 when the New Mexico state legislature passed and the then Gov. Read More
