Letter To The Editor: Answering Scientific Questions

By ROBERT D. DAY
Los Alamos

A DOD employee once told me that when the DOD needed an answer to a scientific question there were a number of avenues to pursue. If a quick answer, a cheap answer, or just an answer was needed, any number of laboratories could be queried; but, if the right answer was desired, then Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) – now called Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) – was the place to go. I was thankful to work for an organization with this reputation.

If the question is: “Should every Laboratory employee be required to receive a COVID vaccine injection under pain of losing Read More

Letter To The Editor: Erin Green For School Board District 5

By KELLY DOLEJSI
Los Alamos

I want to publicly voice my support for Erin Green for school board, district 5.

I agree with Erin’s platform, but I also love Erin. She’s generous, accepting, humane, compassionate, and thoughtful. She is wonderful. She’s exactly the kind of person I want as a community leader.

She will do anything for her puppies and kittens. She plants lots of trees. She volunteers her time to her church, Girl Scouts, our school board and many other community groups. She has publicly supported, through her work, victims of sexual violence. She is training to be a mental health Read More

Letter To The Editor: Endorsement For Rick Mooday On LAPS School Board

By GREG & PATTI BUNTAIN
Los Alamos

We are writing this letter to endorse Rick Mooday for the District 4 seat on the Los Alamos School Board. We have known Rick for over 20 years as a colleague and a friend.

Rick is passionate about ensuring the availability of high-quality, public-school education for Los Alamos. He is the product of a small-town public-school education, which prepared him well for military service and his career at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

His combat experience in the military, educating undergraduate students in Chemical Engineering, as a baseball coach and his Read More

Letter To The Editor: Vote To Retain Melanie Colgan

By DAVID IZRAELEVITZ
Los Alamos

Reading the recent letters to the editor regarding school curriculum highlights to me the importance of having leadership on the Los Alamos School Board that is professional, well-informed, empathetic, and eager to find community consensus through conversation and information.

My interactions with current School Board member Melanie Colgan, both in a personal capacity and in my role as County Councilor, lead me to support her to continue as my representative on the School Board. Melanie’s dedication to the position is evident, and her demeanor during meetings Read More

Letter To The Editor: LGBTQ+ People Are Actually Pretty Boring

By MICHAEL ADAMS
Los Alamos

Today, I read a letter to the editor, which was surprisingly interesting, or more accurately it pointed to an interesting phenomenon, shared by some humans.

I’ll summarize the letter, without much detail because I feel the author’s points are banal, repugnant, and false.

In short, the author suggests that if the public schools recognize pride month, maintain written materials which reference LGBTQ+ humans, or discourage harassment and violence aimed at LGBTQ+ humans, then the school is somehow infringing on the author’s personal religious freedom.

Letter To The Editor: Unitarian Church Leader Should Keep His Agenda To Himself

By VALERIE FOX
Los Alamos Parent

The local Unitarian Church leader made my case for me (link). He clearly thinks the schools have the right to re-educate our kids to his way of thinking and that parents should pull their kids out of school when our parental autonomy is violated. Therein lies the problem.

Parental autonomy is guaranteed and I have outlined the parameters to ensure it is not violated. LGBTQ is not curriculum and has no place in school.

He should keep his agenda to himself and away from children whom he has no authority over. He is causing division by his intolerance to different beliefs Read More

Letter To The Editor: Religious Freedom?

By Rev. John Cullinan
Pastor, Unitarian Church of Los Alamos

A decade ago, I sat in the Senate gallery at the Roundhouse as senators debated a proposed law that would allow for domestic partnerships.

I listened to those opposed argue the law would impinge on their “religious freedom” because they would be forced to practice against their beliefs. This was a lie on its face at the time, as the state wasn’t proposing to force anyone to act against their beliefs, they were simply creating a new pathway for same-sex couples to have legal recognition by the state.

No religion was going to be forced to perform Read More

Letter To The Editor: Response To ‘Intent To Sue LAPS’

By JOSHUA CHAPMAN
Los Alamos

To the Los Alamos Public Schools and school board,

The feelings expressed by some individuals about the inclusion of LGBTQ+ literature are antiquated and repulsive.  These ‘parents’ that are suing the school board for the removal of LGBTQ+ literature are demonstrating their prejudice under the guise of oppression and child endangerment.

If you don’t want your kid reading the literature, be a parent and tell them such. LGBTQ+ literature is life-saving, and if you believe that the LGBTQ+ agenda is to turn your child into a member of the LGBTQ+ community, then we, collectively, Read More

Letter To The Editor: Notice To LAPS Of Intent To Sue

By VALERIE FOX
Los Alamos Parent

Los Alamos School Board,

Last week, upon receiving a newsletter from my child’s school noting the intent to celebrate LGBTQ this month, I sent out an email to the District Superintendent, School Principal and my child’s teacher stating my intent to sue the LA School District should my child be exposed to said deviant lifestyles and said agenda.

I made my appearance at last week’s school board to advise you of my intent, should that occur. I have been talking with other parents that are fed up with the School District’s assault against our parental autonomy and religious Read More

Letter To The Editor: Barking Dogs In Western Area

By M. PEROTTO
Los Alamos

Dear People of Customer Care, Los Alamos County

I have been a resident of the Western Area for 24 years. Within the last 6 years, some of my neighbors have become careless about controlling their unattended canine pets, which results in general, habitual, regular nuisance in violation of Article 6, Los Alamos County Code; Sec. 6-6. – Unreasonable animal noise prohibited. (a) No person shall own or keep any animal, licensed or not, which by barking or making of other noises, continuously for more than ten minutes, either day or night, causes annoyance to the neighborhood Read More
