Letter To The Editor: Question For Local School Board Candidates

By MELISSA GOLDMAN
Los Alamos

I was disappointed to learn recently that several candidates will not be attending the League of Women Voters’ forum on Oct. 6. I had hoped to pose a particular question so that I and other interested voters could hear the response from all candidates.

Since that will no longer be possible, I am submitting this letter with the hopes that candidates will provide their answer in the comments on our newspaper Facebook page.

I teach at Topper Freshman Academy and Los Alamos High School and am one of the sponsors of our Genders and Sexualities Alliance (GSA, formerly Gay-Straight Read More

Letter To The Editor: Here We Go Again

By BARBARA UHER
Los Alamos

Here we go again.

If it happens to me once in awhile, I would suggest strongly that you check your receipts after grocery shopping.

Smith’s White Rock was out of La Brea sourdough bread two days in a row, so when I was on the Hill Saturday, Sept. 18, I stopped to get bread. I got two loaves and going to check out, I passed green grapes on sale. So I picked up a bag.

Good thing I only had two items and I looked at my receipt. The grapes on sale for .88 cents a pound were rung up at $1.97 a pound, and my bread rung up at $3.99 instead of $2.99.

How many of you are making “donations” and not even aware Read More

Letter To The Editor: Why Is Critical Race Theory Being Taught In Public Schools?

By MICHAEL L. ADAMS
Los Alamos

Note: This letter represents my views and understanding, though I serve as a member of the Racial Justice Action Advisory Council, LAPS Native American Parent Advisory Council, and Los Alamos County Racial Equity and Inclusion Task Force, this letter does not represent the opinions of any of those groups.

I attended the Sept. 17 candidate forum for school board candidates, hosted by the Los Alamos Republican Party, and one thing that jumped out at me was the widespread concern among Los Alamos’ Republicans about the teaching of Critical Race Theory in our public Read More

Letter To The Editor: An Open Letter To LAPS Board Members And Candidates

By KENNETH LEE
Los Alamos

The teaching of Critical Race Theory, CRT, in public school is currently a highly controversial subject across the USA. Before voting in the current school board election, the voters of Los Alamos have the right to know what the positions of the school board candidates are as related to CRT, their understanding of what is included under CRT, and their justifications for their positions.

The current school board can take a position and start a conversation in the community by taking up the issue as an agenda item for their next meeting on affirming or banning the teaching Read More

Letter To The Editor: Open Letter To Some Parents

By TERRY GOLDMAN
Los Alamos

Dear Parents of a young girl bicycling down from Quemazon about the time Mountain School let out on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 16:

Please let her know how close she came to being injured or killed because she did not stop at the North Road stop sign.

We were coming from Diamond so we could see the car coming from the other direction that she could not because of the rock wall to the left of the intersection.

Luckily, that driver was not just freewheeling down their hill as so many do, but even at their moderate speed, only a second or two was the difference between seeing Read More

Letter To The Editor: Vote For Erin E. Green For Los Alamos Public School Board, District 5 (Mountain)

By LISSIE HAM
Los Alamos

Erin E. Green may be a new member of our Mountain Lion family with a daughter in first grade at Mountain this year, but she has been active in the Mountain community for much longer!

As an involved Mountain parent, I am asking for community support to ensure that we elect a School Board Representative who represents who we truly are as a community.

Our Mountain Lion Pledge states, “When we Learn, Improve, Observe, and Nurture, we Succeed!” Erin Green is the embodiment of this creed. She models that commitment to Learn as she continues her graduate studies in Counseling. She Read More

By LIZABETH ROBERTS

If you are planning to have an elective surgery in the future, here are some suggestions on handling your Medical Release.

Read Carefully:

  •  Ask your surgeon how many of your operation he or she has performed in the last twelve months. What and how many complications has he or she had doing this operation in the last 12 months;
  • Ask your surgeon to explain each medical complication listed. Ask if he or she has had of these issues happen during surgery he or she performed. If so, how many times?;
  •  If there have been any associate names added to your farm, ask

Letter To The Editor: 2021 Music Festival And Fireworks Was Glorious … Thank You Everyone!

By STEVE BOERIGTER
President
Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos

Wow! The fantastic music festival and fireworks at Overlook Park on Labor Day weekend was glorious.

The Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos thanks everyone for joining us in the celebration.

It seems like forever ago that we filled the park and could bask in the awesome splendor of the fireworks show. This year’s show was made especially memorable with Katy P’s rendition of the Fireworks song and powerful encore performance.

While the dedication of the fireworks team in Kiwanis might be obvious, much of the community is behind the event long before Read More
