Home Country: Windy Wilson

By Slim Randles

“Well,” Steve said, polishing off the last of his coffee, “what should we discuss this fine morning?”

“I’m awful glad you asked, ol’ pard,” came the cheerful voice of Windy Wilson, emerging through the swinging doors that came from the kitchen of the Mule Barn truck stop.

“Yessir. Awful glad.” Steve and the other members of the world dilemma think tank looked in amazement as this old camp cook and cowboy came over with the coffee pot and topped off their coffee mugs. Windy had found a dish towel and wrapped it around his waist, too.

“Windy?” Doc. said “Mighty fine-looking Read More

Fr. Glenn: The Dawn Shall Break

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

It’s kind of pleasant going to the grocery store first thing on New Year’s day.  Rather than having to hoof it from the hinterlands … well, lookie there—a space right up front. Hardly a creature a’stirring … except a few grumpy, bleary-eyed stockers, and some not-quite-yet-cheery checkers. Hmmm … I wonder if kept up late by fireworks, too. Hmmmm … maybe not that.

Ahh … the new year! … full of promise and expectation! And … heading back out to my trusty mechanical steed, I see at a distance … an angry twenty-something lad in the parking lot with a baseball bat, apparently Read More

An Open Book: Espero Que Si

By DAVID IZRAELEVITZ
Los Alamos

My father and I enrolled in English language lessons in Uruguay before coming to America and my younger siblings absorbed the new language at school like the proverbial sponge. It was my mother, at home all alone, gratefully relying on the abundant Spanish TV programming available in New York City, who lagged behind the rest of us. The few words she picked up over the first years here were learned by trying to converse with our next-door neighbors, a Greek family including another mother similarly stuck at home, presumably without even the benefit of local Greek Read More

The idea behind the Unitarian Church of Los Alamos’ Gaia’s Pantry is simple; take what food items are needed and leave food that can be donated.

The pantry, named after the Greek goddess of nature, opened for business this week in the church parking lot, 1738 North Sage St., but the idea percolated in the minds of the congregation for some time.

Unitarian Church member Kokheong McNaughton said she was introduced to curbside Read More

Home Country: Cowboy Scars

Home Country
By SLIM RANDLES

Steve was just sitting there on the tailgate of his pickup, looking out at the world and thinking he’s doing all right. The two little kids walking down the sidewalk saw their favorite cowboy sitting there and grinned.

“Hi Steve!”

“Oh hey there, Bobby … Sylvia … how you kids doing these days?”

“Had a good Thanksgiving. Yep. Getting ready for Christmas. Bobby was telling me just a while ago that he wants to train horses, like you, when he grows up.”

“I told you not to say anything, Syl, but there you go again. Now Steve will think all I want is horse training lessons.”

“Horse training Read More
