Science Cinema: Saturday Mornings at the Bradbury

The Bradbury Science Museum is proud to announce the launch of a new community video series.  Beginning in 2014, every Saturday at 10:30 a.m., a different science education film will be shown in the auditorium.  

The first showing will be Saturday, Jan. 4 featuring Bill Nye the Science Guy in Amphibians. In this 30-minute video, Bill explains how amphibians can live both on land and in water and demystifies the process of metamorphosis. This film is specifically geared towards children between elementary to middle school ages.

LANL Employees Purchase Nearly 1,000 Gifts for Children/Seniors

The Los Alamos National Laboratory Community Programs Office sponsors the holiday drive and all other giving initiatives. This year, Laboratory employees and subcontract personnel purchased nearly 1,000 gifts for Northern New Mexico children and seniors for distribution through 18 partner agencies as part of the Holiday Drive. New NIST Tests Explore Safety of Nanotubes in Modern Plastics Over Time

Exposed to intense ultraviolet light and high temperatures, samples of epoxy containing multiwalled carbon nanotubes deteriorated. Nearly $2 million has been pledged by Los Alamos National Laboratory employees to United Way and other eligible nonprofit programs during the Laboratory’s 2014 Employee Giving Campaign.

Los Alamos National Security, LLC, which manages and operates the Laboratory for the National Nuclear Security Administration, plans to prorate its $1 million match among the selected nonprofit organizations, bringing the total donation to nearly $3 million.

New Ladder Truck Delivered to LAFD

A brand new ladder truck was delivered this morning to the Los Alamos Fire Department at Fire Station 3 in White Rock. This is the first major fire apparatus to be replaced in the department’s DOE/LAFD vehicle replacement plan. DOE paid for the truck, which cost $858,566 and has a 105-foot ladder and 1,500 gallon per minute pump, holds 300 gallons of water, and is used in high rise and technical fires and to enable crews to reach rooftops to open areas for ventilation.
