Letter To The Editor: Thank You To Taxpayers Of Los Alamos

By Past School Board Presidents
Joan Ahlers, Jody Benson, Judith Bjarke-Mckenzie, Steven P. Girrens,
Nancy (Nan) Holmes, Melanie McKinley, Morrie Pongratz, Dawn VanHaus

We collectively write this letter to express our deep appreciation to our local taxpayers, parents and community members that have unselfishly and generously given to support the future of Los Alamos. We embarked upon this journey in 2007 when we had more than $130 million in capital facilities needs. Since then Los Alamos has passed $60 million in bond funds and received $20 million in matching State funds.

Wadt: On Supporting The School Bond

By BILL WADT
Los Alamos

The ballots for the 2017 school bond were mailed out Jan. 3. There are many good reasons to vote yes. I want to focus on two of them.

For nearly 20 years, I have been involved in the school bond process as a community member. During that time what has impressed me the most is how seriously school leaders have taken their obligation to taxpayers and to students on getting the most out of every school bond dollar. The decisions to integrate new construction and renovation have maximized attractive classroom space for the available funding.

Letter To The Editor: Who Owes Whom An Apology?

By ROSS LIGON
Los Alamos

In response to the article, “Veterans Apologize to Japan for Using Nuclear Weaponsexactly which veterans made this apology?

Two veterans I knew (my father and my father-in-law) gave three of the worst years of their lives and daily risked their lives to turn back the evil Japanese Empire, which threatened to take control of most of Asia.

Up until the time of “this hugely atrocious crime against humanity” (according to the Veterans for Peace) our country had lost thousands upon thousands of lives and vast amounts of resources. As U.S.

Rooney: Education Makes A Difference

By Dr. CYNTHIA ROONEY
UNM-LA CEO

Over the past several months, I have had the opportunity to represent UNM-Los Alamos at numerous events. When invited to speak, it is easy for me to talk about the important role that UNM-LA plays in our community. Yet, it is even more rewarding to listen. At one event, a retiree told me about how her professional career at LANL was re-invented after she decided to take a biology class at UNM-LA and then took “every class offered by Dr. Leslie Dendy.”

At another event, I spoke with a former student and her current employer who both started their accounting careers with Read More

Letter To The Editor: How About LABB (Los Alamos Bowling & Billiards)

By LOUIS ROSOCHA
White Rock

In reply to Khal Spencer’s letter published Jan. 2, 2017 in the Los Alamos Daily Post (link), I suggest a better acronym: LABB (Los Alamos Bowling & Billiards).

Like, Dr. Dude, I’m going down to the LABB to study the collisional dynamics of hard spheres rolling on a finite frictional surface (and maybe have a beer while I’m at this grinding task).

Letter To The Editor: What Los Alamos Needs Is Ninja Bowling

By KHAL SPENCER
Los Alamos

After reading Chet Manley (link) and Louis Rosocha’s (link) somewhat modest proposals to breathe new life into the now abandoned and decrepit Smith’s supermarket location that curses our eastern end of downtown, it seems to me that Messrs. Rosocha and Manley can easily work together on this and do something truly unique to Los Alamos: a Ninja bowling and billiards league.

Just think of the marketing opportunities! It even has a nice ring as an acronym: NBBL.

Letter To The Editor: UNM-LA Provides Important Value To Our Community

By DAVID and TERRY IZRAELEVITZ
Los Alamos

In the next few days, Los Alamos residents will receive a ballot in the mail asking them to support education in our community. The need to continue upgrading our elementary school buildings is self-evident; so is the need for UNM-LA to improve its finances. We hope you will vote in the affirmative to support both questions.

Other letters have explained in more detail and more authoritatively than we can the precarious financial state of our local branch of UNM. Let us remind ourselves of the value that UNM-LA provides to our community.

Letter To The Editor: Response To Ninja Training Center

By LOUIS ROSOCHA
White Rock

I was considerably befuddled by the Letter to the Editor entitled “New Idea for Old Smith’s” by Chet Manley of Los Alamos that appeared in the Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016 print edition of the Post (link).

I had two main impressions: 1) Yes, we need to do something with the valuable ‘Old Smith’s’ supermarket building, and 2) Is this guy really serious? The letter sounded like some sort of comic act (and April Fool’s Day is a long way off)! Why in the wide-wide world and, especially in Los Alamos County, would we need a Ninja training center and Ninja-suited people roaming around Read More

Letter To The Editor: Community’s Help Is Needed As One Of Our Jewels Is Under Assault

By PATRICK SORAN
Los Alamos

In my mind’s eye, a model community needs several positive assets: good governance, good public services (police, fire, utilities, etc.), good job opportunities, good medical facilities, well-educated citizens, scenic surroundings, and good educational opportunities (K-12 and collegiate). Los Alamos is such a community capable of possessing all of these assets. However, we as a community need to support and nourish these assets and for the most part we do support them. Unfortunately one of our jewels is under assault.

Our UNM-LA branch college has lost just

Letter To The Editor: Rebuttal Of Letter By Fairbanks And West

By JOEL M. WILLIAMS
Los Alamos

In response to the Letter to the Editor by Tom Fairbanks and Elizabeth West (link):

Firstly, the Mesa Meadow presentations were completely out of order. Tennis courts at Mesa Meadows was NOT in the Bonding package. Tennis courts at JFK-Mesa Field was the ONLY venue in it! No other.

Next, several years ago, I had determined that courts could be built in Mesa Meadows without being on pool land. This was confirmed by the consultants more recently. Mesa Meadows is county land and not these residents’ backyards. XC skiing and bike riding on the grass Read More
