Letter To The Editor: Obama’s Last Chance To Protect Grand Canyon

By Hannah Perkins and Dan McGuinness
Environment New Mexico, Golden Dawn Gallery

While climbing into ancient cavates and hiking through the beautiful wilderness of Bandelier National Monument a few weeks ago, I was struck by the thought, what if we hadn’t protected this?

What would have happened to sites of the ancestral pueblo culture and the miles of natural wonders if this hadn’t been designated as a national monument one hundred years ago?

Bandelier National Monument doesn’t just preserve history, culture, and nature. It also allows tourism to thrive in Los Alamos and other

Letter To The Editor: Parents Express Support For UNM-LA Mill Levy

By DAVID and HEIDI ROGERS
Los Alamos

As local parents of two Los Alamos High School students, we are writing in support of the upcoming mail-in vote on the UNM-LA mill levy.

UNM-LA benefits everyone in the community, and we are especially thankful that all of our high school kids can take advantage of joint classes at classes at UNM-LA while they are still in high school. Last summer, our son took an EMT training class at UNM-LA, and it was a valuable and transformational experience for him that he couldn’t have gotten at the high school.

We would like UNM-LA to remain a vibrant part of our community for Read More

Letter To The Editor: Thank You Los Alamos Community For Supporting Children’s Christmas Bazaar

By BETH PATTILLO
Children’s Christmas Bazaar Chair

Christmas is almost here! I would like to thank the Los Alamos community for their generosity in supporting the Children’s Christmas Bazaar at Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church during the Winterfest weekend. You were generous with giving of your time and your donations.

At least 75 people helped with set up, baking, greeting, wrapping (at least 25 wrappers wrapping all at the same time!), helping children select gifts and cleaning up. And this all occurs within a 25-hour period of time. I would especially

Letter To The Editor: Support Higher Education – Support UNM-LA

By Marilyn Doolen and Betsy Comly
Co-Facilitators
AAUW-Los Alamos

Higher education is essential to the productivity and innovation of our workforce in New Mexico.

College-educated workers earn higher wages and experience lower levels of unemployment than do workers with less education. Research done by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) forecasts that by 2020, two out of every three jobs will require some postsecondary education.

For many women, that education comes through attending community colleges

Letter To The Editor: Voting Yes On School Bond Benefits Local Students, Teachers, Schools, Community

By SUZETTE FOX
Los Alamos

As a parent representative of the Los Alamos Public School District Parent Council, I hear on a monthly basis what is going on in our school district, what the needs are from each school and how, as parents and a community, we can step forward to make a difference.

School buildings are in need of renovations to improve existing infrastructure. In years past, Los Alamos has had matching funds from the state. Currently, there is no money from the state.

In addition, the state is cutting the current budget in 2017

Letter To The Editor: Thank You Councilor O’Leary

By BRYAN BENNETT
Los Alamos

I want to thank Council Vice Chair Susan O’Leary for her excellent ‘behind the curtain’ articles on the Recreation Bonds.

While my preferred options did not make the final cut (I still think we need something more than two tennis courts and one small playground on North Mesa) I do support the Bonds for new and improved recreation opportunities in the County.

The Councilors three articles make a very good case for making investments in our recreation facilities. I was surprised, and a bit disturbed, that our spending on

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my new community for assisting with my fundraiser this past weekend at the Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce.

I would like to thank my teacher Annette Sehorn, the Los Alamos Culinary teacher, Mrs. Jones and the many friends and fellow DECA members who assisted with the success of the project.

Ruby Selvage is a dear friend and gracious host to help me in so many ways. She was one of more than 15 students, rolling gingerbread dough and creating houses and kits to sell for Read More

Letter To The Editor: Concerning The Bond Election

By CAMILLE MORRISON
Los Alamos

I have a problem with Jim Hall’s letter about the Bond Election.

According to the plan published in the Los Alamos Daily Post, North Mesa was to be developed after Barranca Mesa so they built the Junior High School there. Our kids were all bussed to North Mesa. The land that was set aside for a Junior HS in White Rock is now the Pinon Trails subdivision.

Not all the schools were built in the 1950s. We moved here in 1967 and Chamisa had not been built yet. It was designed to have a third pod when the school population increased. By the time it was needed

Massengale: How Education Has Shaped This Town

By KATE MASSENGALE Ph.D
Retired Associate Professor of English
Retired Dean of Instruction

It will come as no surprise that I support the increase of one mil for UNM-LA this January, as I began teaching there in 1993 and retired as Dean of Instruction in 2013. But my commitment to education began a long time ago. Despite having no children of our own, my husband Bill and I have always voted to support K-12 education wherever we lived. And we have given to our alma maters Texas A & M and Rice University. But in recent years, we have focused our giving to UNM-LA because of its great need.

I know, Read More
