Letter To The Editor: Character, Thoughtfulness And Ideas Count – Money Should Not

By REBECCA SHANKLAND and BARBARA CALEF
Co-presidents, League of Women Voters of Los Alamos

In the wake of the election, we’ve been reflecting on a topic that is close to the hearts of members of the League of Women Voters and others: the corruption of political discourse by money. The League was founded in 1920 when women got the vote. Since then, its mission has been to educate voters.

  • Question:  How many political messages did you receive daily during the recent campaign?
  • Question:  How many of them used a “survey” or “quiz” that concluded by asking for money?
  • Question:  How many

Letter To The Editor: Look Under The Hood And Find UNM-LA Produces Students Who Succeed

By STEVE BOERIGTER
Chair, UNM-LA Advisory Board

I plan to vote “YES” for the UNM-LA Mil Levy election in January. True, as chair of the UNM-LA Advisory Board, this position probably isn’t a surprise to anyone.

In 2010, after completing a year of Leadership Los Alamos, we were challenged to find our passion to go make a difference. I opted to run for the UNM-LA Advisory Board. You elected me to that position in 2011. I knew UNM-LA provided a quality education at a great price, but I also felt that UNM-LA could be much more than it was, maybe too much “UNM” and not enough “LA”.

I believed then (as I do Read More

Letter To The Editor: We See First-hand The Value Of Investing In Los Alamos Public Schools

By MELINDA and JOAQUIN GUTIERREZ
Los Alamos

In Los Alamos, we invest in the things that matter. Our time, our talents, our treasure. Whether we spend hours volunteering to judge a Science Fair, buying dinner at the spaghetti fundraiser, or participating in the Cross Country Run-a-Thon at Sullivan Field, we invest in our kids and in their education. When January rolls around in less than a month, we have the opportunity to choose to invest in something that affects all of us at so many levels – our children, our families, our community, and our economy: the LAPS School Bond.

By checking “YES” for the Read More

Letter To The Editor: Concerned About ‘Open Space’ Changed To ‘Mixed-Use’ Without Public Notice

By SUE BARNS

Los Alamos

During the past year, many community members participated in drafting a new Comprehensive Plan for Los Alamos County. Within the Plan is a Future Land Use map, which is designed to be a “guide to land development and preservation decisions.”

At the Nov. 14 County Council meeting, and in several previous public planning sessions, a map was presented, which showed the entire area surrounding the paved Canyon Rim Trail, south of the airport and N.M. 502, designated as “Open Space”. However, during the meeting, a change was made by the Council to designate part Read More

Letter To The Editor: Keep Being Good Place To Live

By JUDITH MCKENZIE
Los Alamos

Los Alamos has made its way to the top of several lists of the best places to live! That is great!

Let’s stay up there by voting to support the bond for Los Alamos Public Schools. It will definitely be of benefit to our students, our teachers and our schools, to make our schools top notch!
The bond also is a boost to our community, by making it more appealing to possible future residents. In the long term, it will increase all of our property values, too. Everyone wins, when you vote YES.
You will receive

The 10th annual Pajarito Trail Fest turned out to be another great community event.

About 90 runners gathered on a beautiful October morning and runners completed the 10K or 15-mile course on the trails of Pajarito Mountain and surrounding area. The event has always had a fundraising element with proceeds going to local non-profit organizations.

Letter To The Editor: An Effortless Way To Help Education…

By JENNY MCCUMBER
Los Alamos School Board

Take the time to vote for the public schools bond in January. It’s easy and almost effortless. If your house is anything like mine, there’s a stack of papers on the counter where important things may get lost or overlooked. Apparently, every college in the country feels the need to send a glossy publication to my home because a high school senior lives here. When I get my ballot in January, though, I will open it immediately and check the yes boxes, sign and seal it, place a stamp on the envelope and put it in the mailbox right away. It’s too important to get lost Read More

Letter To The Editor: Open Letter To Obama From Sierran

By JOHN R. BUCHSER
Santa Fe

Dear President Obama,

Earlier this week, my wife and I returned from several days volunteering at the Oceti Sakowin camp in North Dakota. There was a lot of activity in camp preparing for the winter. I have never encountered so much positive energy towards a common goal, it was with great sadness we had to depart due to both of us getting viral infection of the lung.

Generally, an 1800+ mile long oil pipeline would require an environmental impact statement (EIS). This has NOT been done for this major project. Given president-elect Trump’s statements

By CHRISTINE SWEENEY
Troop Committee Chair
Los Alamos Boy Scout Troop 22

Los Alamos Boy Scout Troop 22 would like to thank the Los Alamos Sportsmans Club (LASC) for again hosting the Troop’s annual Turkey Roast earlier this month.

The Club not only provided excellent facilities for the event, but also provided safety and marksmanship instruction for the boys. The Club even donated practice ammunition and targets. The scouts had a great time,
finishing up their Shooting Merit Badges and learning about safety and responsibility.

The Club’s support for Cubs, Scouts in general and all the other Read More
