Letter To The Editor: Shredding Is Thoughtful, Helpful And Appreciated

By MARVEL HARRISON
Los Alamos

Ask any business owner, community outreach is good business. Our local credit unions band together twice a year to offer free paper shredding for Los Alamos and White Rock residents.

Whether we like it or not, we are not completely a paperless society so offering this amenity is a thoughtful, practical community outreach. This service, as a way to reach customers is much more environmentally sound than handing out plastic trinkets with a business name stamped on it which sooner or later end up in our

Letter To The Editor: Finding Teachable Moments

By A Teachable Citizen
Los Alamos

The evening is Sept. 9, 2016 on the eve of the 15th anniversary of Sept. 11, the setting is under the Friday night-lights of a Los Alamos High Scholl home football game. As the national anthem commences a group of high school kids take their hats off place their hands in a respectful manner and stand at attention. The typical laughing, smiling and talking to one another just as the anthem commences occurs but all quickly quiet down and show their respect and attention for their country’s display of the red, white and blue. As soon as the anthem finishes the kids cheer Read More

Letter To The Editor: Crosswalk Confusion

By JOHN E. PEARSON
Los Alamos

There have been two subsequent letters regarding my letter about the crosswalk at Diamond and Sycamore. These are indicative of the confused nature of that mark.

Daren Savage says he used to walk his dog in the area and never knew that there was a “formal unmarked crosswalk” at Diamond and Sycamore. The other writer thinks marking crosswalks would place an undue financial burden on the county and that the crosswalk is adequately marked. So one write doesn’t even realize it is marked while the other thinks the existing marking is adequate.

Letter To The Editor: Be A Courteous Pedestrian

By DAREN SAVAGE
Los Alamos

Thanks to John Pearson for pointing out in his Letter to the Editor, “Pedestrian Crossing Rudeness”, that there is a pedestrian crossing at Diamond and Sycamore.

I used to walk my dogs in that neighborhood and never knew that was a formal unmarked crosswalk. But then, I thought ALL intersections in New Mexico contained marked or unmarked crosswalks, not just the one at Diamond and Sycamore.

Besides trying to be a courteous pedestrian who wouldn’t dream of forcing local commuters driving on a major thoroughfare to stop for me, I also don’t trust

Letter To The Editor: Pedestrian Crossing Rudeness

By JOHN E. PEARSON
Los Alamos
There is a pedestrian crossing at the corner of Diamond Drive and Sycamore Street. The county ought to paint lines so that unaware drivers will start obeying the law.

When a driver sees a pedestrian in a pedestrian crossing appropriate behavior includes slowing down and coming to a stop until the pedestrian has crossed. Other behaviors including  speeding up, screaming, swearing, gesticulating wildly, etc. are not appropriate.

Letter To The Editor: Bullying In Politics

By R. IGNATIUS KUROPATWINSKI
Los Alamos

This may be a weird sounding letter, but I do not like politics. I do not like politics because of how each major party candidate talks mean about one another.

If we were in school this type of behavior would be called bullying. It would be nice if we held all people to the same standards as we expect from our middle schoolers (I am one on them).

I am also writing this letter, because I am working on my communications merit badge. I really wish everyone would follow the scout law, especially being courteous and being kind.

Letter To The Editor: Pete Sheehey-LAC Sheriff

By JJ MAIER
Los Alamos

Thanks Pete for your letter to the editor on why we DO need a Sheriff! I have been feeling like I was a voice in the wilderness on this issue, and you composed it so well – folks need your perspective.

Los Alamos, as you know, is my hometown, and we have had a Sheriff for as long as I am able to remember. When I was small, the Sheriff had many more duties and responsibilities than today. My dad was a member of the mounted Sheriff’s Posse and they were called all over the state for rescue work.

Letter To The Editor: Better Tennis Court Approach

By ED BIRNBAUM
Los Alamos

I have to agree with Saturday’s letter regarding placing more tennis courts at Urban. Although the four additional courts will fit there, if one of the goals of adding these courts is to have tournaments held in Los Alamos, the parking issue becomes a serious one. There is just no room to accommodate the school buses and cars that such a tournament would likely attract.

A better approach would be to add these additional courts to the ones already located behind UNM-LA. This location is close to Read More

Letter To The Editor: School Board President Addresses Safety, Misinformation And Public Input Issues

By Jim Hall, School Board President
Los Alamos Public Schools

This letter is to share important information about school safety in Los Alamos, correct misinformation in recent news reports, and to reinforce that the School Board always considers public input.

I begin with job number one – safety for students and staff in the Los Alamos Public Schools and local communities. Children are our greatest asset and they are the future. It is our grave responsibility to assure that learning occurs in a place that is safe and free from harm.  Read More
