By STEPHANIE NAKHLEHLike all parents, I find school shootings horrifying. I was dismayed, however, to hear that the police chief and the school board collaborated, apparently with little or no public notice, to install a cache of AR-15s and shotguns on school grounds. The county has bent over backwards to solicit public input on a number of issues affecting the community—why were we parents not shown a similar level of consideration from LAPS when we’re talking about stockpiling guns at a school? I have already contacted Chief Sgambellone and asked that we have Read More
By LAUREN GRIFFITHI’ve been following the rather heated debate about storing guns in safes on the high school and middle school campuses and want to add a point of view for this change.
Firstly, I do understand why so many parents are upset that they weren’t included in and/or notified first that these changes may be taking place. These kids are our lives and any change to their potential safety, be it good or bad, should not be taken lightly. If the schools can ensure parents are notified of curriculum changes, they should certainly be able to do this.

By JARET MCDONALDAs a resident and county council candidate, I 100 percent support the police department keeping firearm safes on campus at the high school and middle school.
If LAPD feels this is the correct avenue to help keep our schools and children safe, then we should support them. We may never appreciate this idea until it is too late.
School shootings have become more of a common evil than any of us want to admit and I welcome this defensive tactic to stop these actions before they become tragedies. I have complete trust in our chief, police department, and LAPS board in this Read More
By STAN KOSIEWICZA few days before Charles Bowman wrote his retort to my letter, I asked the Los Alamos Daily Post and the Los Alamos Monitor to publish the correct gas composition of gases generated by radiolysis of cellulosics. The Post immediately corrected my online story to show the main gases were hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and lesser amounts of carbon monoxide, see Zerwekh (ref.1) and Kosiewicz (ref.2) cited below. Hereafter, I will just refer to them as ref. 1 and ref.2.
Bowman cites ref. 1 as showing radiolytic gas pressure doubling in one experiment in 21 days. He states, Read More
By KHALIL J. SPENCERFr. Glenn Jones wishes that “…someone catches and transports these bears hanging around town…” (letter). I sympathize with Fr. Jones in looking after the safety of his flock. The problem is that Los Alamos is a rural, mountainous town and is naturally black bear habitat. Removing a bear or three will not remove the fact that we share our county with wildlife, bears and other large animals included.
Thankfully, black bears are rarely aggressive towards humans. The recent attack in the mountains resulted from Read More

Los Alamos
The unsigned letter from the Los Alamos GOP and Dr. Reilly’s letter about Hillary Clinton are not up to the standards I expect in this community. Just a few comments.
Under the U.S. Supreme Court case Communications Workers of America v. Beck (1988) non-union members in a union shop do not have to pay for union political activity but only that part of the dues that go to representation with the employer. Union members vote on what political activity their union will become involved with through their own representatives Read More
