Letter to the Editor: I Beg To Differ

By GERALD M. ANTOS
Los Alamos

Ref: Dr. T. Douglas Reilly letter “In Defense of Hillary” published Aug. 18, 2016 in the Los Alamos Daily Post:

Come on Doug … GET REAL! Do you really believe everything ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN tell you about Hillary?

Her actions do speak for themself. There are so many stories, articles and books about the corruption of the Clinton clan that it boggles the imagination that you would consider as reliable anything Mrs. Clinton has to say.

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black! It seems that you are just another

Letter to the Editor: Bowman Response To Kosiewicz

By Charles D. Bowman
President, ADNA Corporation
Los Alamos

Kosiewicz, apparently from his letter, a key leader in establishing the design basis for WIPP, says he retired from LANL 11 years ago. It would have served readers well if he had not relied on memory before commenting on our analysis of the barrel incident and our “errors and omissions.”

Among his misstatements:

  1. He writes, “In our experiments, the major gases produced from radiolysis of cellulosics were carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide with lesser amounts of hydrogen.” However Fig. 10 of Zerwechk’s 1979 LANL

Letter To The Editor: Response To The ‘Elephant In The Room’

By EDWARD BIRNBAUM
Los Alamos

I found the “Elephant in the Room” letter in the Los Alamos Daily Post interesting on several levels. First, who exactly wrote the letter? Is this anonymous person writing on behalf of all members of the GOP in Los Alamos County? How many folks signed the letter?

Second, how should the three questions asked be answered?

Currently, members of a union are NOT forced to pay the portion of dues used for political advocacy if they object, and no one is advocating that they should be forced to do so. They do have to pay for union representation Read More

Heinrich: U.S. Must Help Safeguard Tribal Patrimony

By U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-NM

Earlier this year, when looking through a list of tribal artifacts up for bid at an art auction house in Paris, the Pueblo of Acoma discovered that the Acoma shield, a sacred ceremonial object, had been stolen and was about to be sold to the highest bidder.

After Acoma Gov. Kurt Riley notified me, I wrote a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry urging the U.S. State Department to take all possible action to help repatriate the shield and other stolen cultural items to American Indian tribes. Thankfully, in that particular case, intense public outcry and diplomatic Read More

Letter To The Editor: A Positive Experience

I am probably like many of you and wondered why New Mexico would support the film industry by giving them a rebate. I had an opportunity to find out recently when the No Exit Films requested to use our house to film scenes for “Granite Mountain.” Why they chose our house I don’t know and I must say I was a little hesitant at first. However, the Location Manager explained the process and we consented.

The process took three days to set up, shoot, and take down. Everyone whom I interacted Read More

Letter To The Editor: Relay For Life Week

By Los Alamos Resident
Name withheld by request

I am a breast cancer survivor. Many people have told me, “I just don’t know what to say.” So, let me try to offer some suggestions, in honor of Relay for Life Week – on what to say to your friend who has cancer.

The “rule” is  listening is the language of love. Cancer is a tough diagnosis, so your friend needs some compassion. So ask, how is it going – you can do this in person, you can do this thru an email, you can do this in a card. But, only ask, if you are willing to listen. No one is required to care and no one

Sheehey: Why Los Alamos Needs A Sheriff

By PETE SHEEHEY
Los Alamos County Councilor

The County Council recently voted 5-2 to put a proposed change to the County Charter on the November 2016 general election ballot to eliminate the office of Sheriff. I have no objection to the voters deciding on this issue, but I voted against the motion because eliminating the Sheriff is a bad idea. We have a Police Department with a multi-million dollar yearly budget, led by an excellent Chief. Why then should Los Alamos County also have an elected Sheriff with a small budget and staff?

Elected Sheriffs are a very enduring tradition Read More

The Elephant In The Room: Filling Justice Scalia’s Shoes

The Elephant in the Room
By The Los Alamos GOP

Should a teacher be forced to pay union dues to fund the campaign of a political candidate she does not support?

Can a state pass a law prohibiting the carrying of firearms in public, effectively making the Second Amendment null and void in that state?

Should a pharmacist be forced to sell abortion drugs despite his religious objections?

These are just a few of the issues that will be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court in the months ahead. Their decisions will touch the lives—and rights—of every American citizen for generations to come.

Letter To The Editor: In Defense Of Hillary

Dr. T. DOUGLAS REILLY
Los Alamos

Hillary’s negative approval ratings are caused by the misinformation supplied incessantly by the GOP, the media. They are not caused by her actions.

My defense of Hillary Clinton:

  • Hillary’s early life.
  • Born Hillary Diane Rodham Oct. 26, 1947 in Chicago, the oldest of three children.
  • Her parents were the owner of a drapery-fabric business and a homemaker, a middle-class family with conservative values.
  • She described herself as a Tom-boy, fond of bike riding, softball, skating, and the Cubs.
  • In high school she served on the student council and became

Letter to the Editor: Los Alamos Needs Emergency Vet

By DIANN MILLS
Los Alamos

I had to make the dreaded hour long trip to Santa Fe Emergency Vet on Sunday with a sick cat. I’m thankful that they are there. But having to wait an hour to get help for a bleeding or sick cat or dog is so unsettling.

And the fact that they are closed on Wednesday and Thursday for the foreseeable future because they can’t find enough vets who want to work in emergency medicine is really scary.

Can’t our local vets get together and offer after hours care for at least Wednesdays and Thursdays until Santa Fe is open again on those days? We could sure use after hours emergency vet Read More
