Letter To The Editor: For The Love Of Daisy

By HOLLY BATES
Los Alamos

After the loss of our beloved cat, my son and I decided to invite a very lucky shelter dog into our home. From the very moment Daisy Mae arrived, our lives were filled with laughter and joy that no other pet had ever provided.

She quickly became my very best friend and I am now left feeling deep sadness and despair. The house is quiet, all her belongings have been gently packed away and are awaiting her remains to return to us.

The point of this letter is to not only pay a small tribute to my forever friend, but to extend my deepest

Letter To The Editor: Fiscal Frugality And County Council — Support Your Local Sheriff

By TERRY GOLDMAN
Los Alamos

I have been mulling over Councilor (Kristin) Henderson’s comments on frugality vs. wasteful duplication in our County government and decided to be very impressed.

I will be even more so when she identifies the five Councilors that she has convinced to join her in resigning from the Council to avoid the wasteful ‘duplication’ of having seven Councilors instead of just one.

Regarding the Sheriff’s position, however, while I have not the slightest reason to suspect any corruption in the current or past Councils, I do recall the Founding Fathers Read More

Letter To The Editor: Yet More Reason To Worry About Government In Los Alamos

By KHALIL SPENCER
Los Alamos

If the state law regarding who has the authority to hire and fire deputy sheriffs is as straightforward as stated by Sheriff Lucero in the Los Alamos Daily Post story today (July 2, 2016), then the county administration and Council are grossly out of line.

I would hate for Los Alamos County to be hit by yet another lawsuit resulting from an inability to manage our county properly and according to the law. Let’s get the law straight. Whoever is wrong needs to publicly apologize to the citizens of this county.

Furthermore, if Mr. Burgess really said “…it Read More

Letter To The Editor: Let’s Accentuate White Rock

By DON LUCERO
White Rock Resident Since July 1978

When I first reviewed the schematics of the proposed new DNCU-WR building, I suggested that a clock, thermometer, elevation, and White Rock be displayed on the massive wall surface.

We continue to receive more and more visitors here in WR, which is the desire of the LA County Council, Chamber of Commerce, etc., so why not tell visitors something about White Rock…especially now that we have our own Zip Code!

Visitors would love to know something about our community, plus would use up some of the excessive wall surface. Don Lucero, WR resident Read More

Letter To The Editor: Dismayed That Individuals Are Vandalizing Campaign Posters In Los Alamos

By SUSAN SEESTROM
Los Alamos

I am dismayed to find that in Los Alamos there are people vandalizing campaign posters.

We mounted two Hillary Clinton posters in our yard. The next morning both were torn down, with damage sufficient that it was unlikely to have been caused by the wind. We remounted them using sturdy wood pieces.

Again the one nearest the road was knocked down and the wood broken.

Exercising our democracy through supporting candidates of our choice is one of the most fundamental rights of our republic. The fact that some misguided individuals choose to interfere with this right is appalling. Read More

Letter To The Editor: The Cost Of Ignorance

By Dr. T. Douglas Reilly
Physicist, retired from LANL, EURATOM, US DOE, and the IAEA

Am-241 from Santa Fe to LANL:

A recent local incident involved a radioactive americium source (Am-241) found in Santa Fe and tranferred to LANL This cost $6 million (paid by the business owner) and involved 40 people. The source was actually of no health or safety concern and could have been transported in a pickup by one or two people. Ignorance of ionizing radiation led to an unnecessary action that cost significant money.

Letter To The Editor: LA Mountain Cleanup Project Impact Factor

By NIC GONZALES
Los Alamos

Dear Jennifer and Forest Service,

As the youth member who developed the idea of holding the project to Clean Up the decades of paint-related litter on LA Mountain, I’d like to thank you all dearly for allowing my club, Rotary Interact, and me the permission to clean up the notorious LA Mountain in Los Alamos.

Through the diligent work from 10 of our youth members, we were able to scale the mountain this last Saturday on the hottest day of the year (not intentional…) and collect 90 articles of trash, which we took to the dump later that day! Fifty-six

Letter To The Editor: Response To Jody Benson And Message To The New Mexico Delegation

By DAN OLIVER
Los Alamos

Yes, it’s a no-brainer that it’s a bad thing when terrorists or mentally unstable people get their hands on guns and we should try to prevent that where possible. However, I am quite shocked at the praise that many Democrats in the legislature are receiving over their recent actions in the name of “preventing terrorism.”

Sure, the proposed laws have catchy buzz-phrases and could sound appealing if you look no deeper than the surface, but in fact, there are two major problems.

First, the legislation proposed would have done nothing to prevent

Letter To The Editor: No Fly, No Buy Bill

By KHALIL SPENCER
Los Alamos

I’d like to thank Daren Savage for his detailed rebuttal of Jody Benson’s editorial. With regards to the No-Fly/No Buy list, it is instructive to look at a suit that was filed in Federal court against the Terror Watch List.

In an April 5, 2016 Christian Science Monitor article, we learn that “…a Muslim civil rights group has filed a class-action lawsuit in federal court in Alexandria, Va., on behalf of anyone who has wrongly been placed on the terror watch list including, …a 4-year-old California boy, who was placed on the list when he was 7 months Read More

Letter To The Editor: No-Fly-No-Buy Bill Bull From Benson

By DAREN SAVAGE
Los Alamos

In Jody Benson’s “An Open Letter To The New Mexico Delegation” she sets up several straw man arguments only to knock them down. Let’s look at them one by one.

1. The “No-Fly-No-Buy Bill”. The No-Fly List is a secret list maintained by the government with no oversight and there are many instances of law abiding citizens being erroneously added without their knowledge. As House Speaker Paul Ryan noted, “I think it’s very important to remember people have due process rights in this country, and we can’t have some government
