Letter To The Editor: Response To Jody Benson

By ALAN WADLINGER
Los Alamos

Some people might raise a minor issue with the editorial of Jody Benson published Sunday, June 26 in the Los Alamos Daily Post.

To quote the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights:

“Right of people to bear arms not to be infringed. A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.“

Some people might feel strongly that the Bill of Rights should be interpreted as for the time period when it was written and not falsely extrapolated to the modern world. In

Letter To The Editor: To Our Christian Brethren At FBCLA

By Rev. GLENN JONES, Pastor
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church

To our Christian brethren at First Baptist Church of Los Alamos,

Please know that you are in the hearts and prayers of all of us here at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church as you work through the grief, shock, pain, fear, humiliation and horror of recent revelations.

The extended Catholic family throughout the world has had to endure so many agonies of such—and even worse—betrayals of trust in recent years, especially of our most innocent…by some of our most trusted.

Such incidents tar all of our Christians

Letter To The Editor: Something Has Changed And It’s Not The Gun

By White Rock Resident

I’ve written about this subject before, but last night I noticed something that seemed to support my opinion even more.

Last night I watched The Silence of the Lambs (1991). I’ve seen this movie before but there was something I noticed this time. During the gun scenes, the vast majority of the FBI agents were carrying revolvers. I did see what appeared to be a submachine gun in one scene, and a couple wooden stock bolt action sniper rifles. But I did not see one single AR style rifle.

Granted, this isn’t actual footage, it’s a Hollywood movie, but my point is, back in 1991, just a Read More

Letter To The Editor: Brexit … Mourning Exit From EU

By Dr. T. DOUGLAS REILLY
Los Alamos

I think I may wear black today (June 24) in mourning for the UK voting to leave the EU.

In early 1975, we left home in New Mexico to move to Italy. We took three months to get there, driving across the US, sailing on a Russian ship, Mikhail Lermontov, to La Hague, and then through France and northern Italy to Ispra. For almost 2.5 years, I worked in the Joint Research Centre of the European Communities (EURATOM).*

In late 1978, we arrived back in Los Alamos after taking three months driving through Europe, mainly France; taking a ferry to England; Read More

An Open Letter To The New Mexico Delegation

By JODY BENSON
Los Alamos

Dear Senator Heinrich, and Representatives Lujan and Lujan Grisham:

Thank you, Sen. Heinrich, for co-sponsoring the “No-Fly-No-Buy Bill” that would restrict people on the terrorist watch list from buying a firearm. You exhibit incredible courage for supporting even a modicum of gun control in this weapons-dominated Congress. Sadly, nowadays, it takes guts for you, our representatives, to support the will of the people over that of lobbyists, and over the high-decibel shouts from the my-rights-over-that-of-the-country-ers.

And about the NFNB Bill: how could Read More

Letter To The Editor: Parent’s Perspective On Teacher

By A Los Alamos Parent:

I don’t have any first hand experience with Mr. Daniel’s (former LAHS drama teacher) facebook post or his comments at the XQ assembly that created controversy. I can only comment on what I have experienced as a parent of a student in his class. And suggest that perhaps the reason Mr Daniel’s contract was not renewed was because he did not follow school guidelines for publishing grades and was not a good teacher.

My daughter had Mr Daniel for Theatrical Design. I became concerned when about halfway through the semester Mr. Daniel had not yet

Letter To The Editor: Dog Jog Thank You

By WENDEE BRUNISH
Chair, Los Alamos Dog Jog

The weather gods smiled on homeless cats and dogs on Saturday April 30, 2016. Despite rain and wind on Friday and snow on Sunday, Saturday was sunny and calm for the 19th annual Los Alamos Dog Jog. The fine weather brought out hundreds of humans and their canine companions to enjoy the 5K run or the two mile walk.

This year’s Dog Jog raised over $13,500 for Friends of the Shelter. Friends of the Shelter (FOS) is a nonprofit organization that provides assistance to abandoned animals and to pets and their owners

Letter To The Editor: A Parent’s Opinion

By PAUL C. DOWDEN
Los Alamos

I have always kept my opinions to myself. Now it’s time to speak out.

I was stuck with a custody situation that required me to pay all expenses as all fathers got in the 1990’s. That didn’t matter; I got six months of custody per year with my young daughter. I paid all the travel across the country several times a year, it was all worth it, money means nothing compared to being a great parent.

I work at the Lab so daycare was most important. It meant that I could afford her Mother’s mistakes but daycare actually was good for her socialization.

After trying a few daycare facilities Read More

Letter To The Editor: Thank You Sheriff

By HOLLY BATES
Los Alamos

With the recent arrest of former Pastor Paul Cunningham, I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to not only the LAPD but to our Sheriff and his team for their involvement in this case.

With the recent news of our county council’s attempts to abolish our Sheriff’s Department, it is quite apparent how truly necessary it is to our community that we have a Sheriff’s Department to protect our children.

I was appalled and deeply saddened to learn that our county has been struck with these sorts of criminal acts against children

Letter To The Editor: Doubts About County Property Clean-Up Effort

By CHRISTINE WEAVER
Los Alamos

I love the optimistic article about county clean-up and the idea that code enforcement will actually make people comply.

I had a friend in town last summer for a class reunion and we drove down a street where he used to live in the 60s. It was 41st Street between Urban and Sycamore. I watched his face fall as we drove past his former home and he commented that the entire street resembled a shanty town. There are houses with untamed yards, trash (obviously treasure to some) sitting on front yards, and unattended dead trees down the entire block –
