Compelling Reason NOT To Build LANL Bypass Road

This bear is spotted recently strolling along West Road. Photo by Andi Kron

On an evening around sunset recently, I was enjoying a beautiful view and quiet stroll across Omega Bridge and then onto the trail behind the Research Park.

As usual, I like to take the trail behind the building rather than the noisier West Jemez Road. As I headed out of the trees and approached the intersection with West Road, I looked up and quite unexpectedly saw the cutest little bear–about 2 years old–wandering around the road in front of me. I stopped and took a

Letter To The Editor: Thank You Los Alamos!

By MANDY MARKSTEINER, Owner
Los Alamos 24-Hour Laundry Service

Los Alamos 24-Hour Laundry Service has had a wonderful and successful launch, and I have to thank everyone who has been so supportive of the idea and encouraging.

We got started a few days ago with a simple offer, that we will pick up, wash, fold and deliver your laundry within 24 hours. Los Alamos 24-Hour Laundry Service is a home-based business, but we are looking for opportunities to expand.

We’ve already had several pickups, and I’ve hired two wonderful women to help to ensure that we can fulfill all of our orders.

By GEORGE CHANDLER
Los Alamos

Kudos to the four County Councilors who showed their mettle last night by voting to let you make the decision on the Sheriff’s department.

Councilors Kristin Henderson, Susan O’Leary, David Izraelevitz and Chair Rick Reiss faced a hostile crowd but did the right thing and gave the decision to the voters.

Congratulations and good job!

Letter To The Editor: Phone Scam Targets Seniors

By CATHY KNOOP
Los Alamos

Wednesday morning I received a call from a man who said he was from the IRS, and that I was going to be sued by the IRS for unpaid taxes during the years of 2009 to 2014 in the amount of $1,400 approximately.

He gave me his name and employee number, my case number and two dates last year of certified letters I supposedly did not respond to. I received no letters. His name, said he, was Jason Smith! He had a middle eastern accent. Those last two facts raised my suspicions!

Meanwhile, a call to the IRS in Santa Fe cleared up the matter. They

WIlliams: NM502/Central – Traffic Planning Gone Awry

Note that both EB and WB NM502 are designed for 40mph. Note the 50-ft scale at the lower right that pertains to reaction distance inside the roundabout, as well as to design parameters. Note, too, that a “fastest path” was not provided by the designer (indicated by a dash in the table) for WB NM502 traffic on the continuation of this state highway. Image Courtesy/Joel WIlliams

A roundabout will be installed at NM502 and Central because that is what the council has decreed and that is what the NMDOT is going to build for them or do nothing at this

Letter To The Editor: Thank You, Los Alamos Friends Of The Shelter

By HEATHER HUGHES
Los Alamos

I just wanted to take a few moments out of the day to thank the volunteers at Los Alamos Friends of the Shelter for their amazing perseverance to ensure one of their shelter dogs, Maddie, got a forever home this past Feb. 28.

I don’t fully understand the ins and outs of what took place that day (a Sunday). All I know is that my husband and I sat in the Meet ‘n Greet room with Maddie for over three hours as volunteers worked tirelessly to undo an agreement that had been made to send Maddie to another shelter in Albuquerque the very next day.

We wanted

Letter To The Editor: LAMC Exceeds My Expectations

By LELAND S. LEHMAN
Lifelong Los Alamos resident

This letter of thanks and gratitude is addressed to the staff of the Los Alamos Medical Center Emergency Room and Medical Surgery Floor.

Due to an accidental overdose of ibuprofen last week, I was admitted to the emergency room at LAMC for a bleeding duodenal ulcer. I can’t express enough thanks and gratefulness for the kind and professional treatment that I received by the very patient staff and management of the emergency room.

I was then transferred to the second floor medical surgery wing for further care. Again I was treated with the most Read More
