Letter To The Editor: Is National Wildlife Federation Right Agency For Los Alamos?

TERRY DUBOIS
Los Alamos

On April 23, our county was recognized as New Mexico’s first “Community Wildlife Habitat” (link). A representative from the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) was on hand to present the certificate to county officials.

Some disturbing details emerge upon closer inspection of the NWF. This is an agency that appears to have wildlife in its best interest, unfortunately, they promote trapping of wildlife. https:////www.nwf.org/Who-We-Are/Affiliate-Partnership/Resolutions/Resolutions/1996/1996-12.aspx. Los Alamos passed an ordinance in

Letter To The Editor: To The Person Vandalizing PEEC’s Hiking Posts

By LAURA LEITNER
Los Alamos

To the person who is vandalizing PEEC’s hiking posts:

I have four sons who are thoroughly enjoying PEEC’s new hiking program “Passport to the Pajarito Plateau”. They have always loved nature and being in the outdoors, and they are very excited about the new program. They are so excited about it that we are making time to do some fun hikes when we might not otherwise have squeezed it into our busy schedule.

We were, in fact, planning to do the Acid Canyon hike the day after I read about that particular post being removed. I told my boys that someone had stolen it. My oldest Read More

Letter To The Editor: LAPD Is An Important Community Partner And We Thank Them

By KATHERINE WATSON
Executive Director
Pajarito Environmental Education Center

I would like to thank the Los Alamos Police Department on behalf on the Pajarito Environmental Education Center for the assistance they have been giving us in tracking down the vandal who has attempted to stop participation in our Passport to the Pajarito Plateau program.

PEEC designed this program as a fun way to get kids and adults outside, enjoying our many beautiful trails. People of all ages in the community are excited to hike our trails, “stamp” their passports by making a crayon rubbing of a plate on a special Read More

Letter To The Editor: Wow!

By GEORGE CHANDLER
Los Alamos

In February of 2014 and again in May of 2015 we were surprised by a knock on our door. A utilities crew told us they were coming into our yard to find a leak. Looking over our back fence, each time we discovered a river of the county’s water emanating from our yard and washing across our neighbors’ yards and into the street.

The water main runs through our neighbor’s backyard and connects to our delivery line there. This was followed by a backhoe and other equipment crossing our other neighbor’s yard and tearing down the fences and a couple of days of a half dozen guys digging Read More

Letter To The Editor: Between Trump And Clinton…

By ROY M. MOORE
Los Alamos

I once swore that I would never vote for Hillary for President. It’s funny how life seems to always make one eat one’s words. If the choice be between Hillary and Donald, I would now have to vote for Hillary.

The reason I didn’t like her is because I thought she was self-serving and only interested in her own welfare. But she was a very good Secretary of State and that made me change my opinion of her. What was most important to me, was that she never spoke of her own plans during that time. She was a team player and totally followed the will of her President.

Letter To The Editor: Skandera Chairs PARCC Governing Board

By DOUG REILLY
Los Alamos

In November 2015, PED Secretary Hannah Skandera became chair of the Governing Board* of the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC).

Before she became chair, she was a member of the board. We’re well aware of the fuss over TESTING in New Mexico schools. We’ve been hearing a rather constant battle between the PED and NM teachers and administrators about the PARCC testing program and the grading of teachers and schools based on test scores.

This even led to lowering the grades

Letter To The Editor: Slow Down In School Zone Please!

By Concerned Parent
Los Alamos

Parents and residents on North Mesa, please  SLOW DOWN in the school zone.

I drive my daughter to school at Los Alamos Middle School almost every morning and parents and residents are not slowing down in the blinking school zone.

If you are five minutes late to work that is much better than the possibility of hitting a child. PLEASE SLOW DOWN!

Schultz: Turning Away Is Not The Solution

By ROBYN SCHULTZ, Chair
Democratic Party of Los Alamos County

Complaining about the current state of politics in our country seems to be very popular. I hear people say that the process is rigged, that “political machines” control everything, that the average person has no power. I agree that the process is not optimal and can be very confusing.

People are right to complain about our political system, but turning away is not the solution. “Political machines” are made up of people. People like you and me. You can complain about the process, try to ignore it, or Read More

Letter To The Editor: MicroMike Thanks Community

By ROY M. MOORE
Los Alamos

Since the movie The Caveman Of Atomic City will be screened Saturday at the Albuquerque Film and Music Experience, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the people who have contributed to this film over the past decade.

Several hundred people from eleven countries have participated and most of them have contributed their skills as a labor of love since our budget has been very small. The film not only features my original gravitational philosophical model that unites science and spirituality under a single model, but has outstanding original

Letter To The Editor: Independent Audit Of County’s Personnel Policies Is Just Good Business

By JUDY and DON MACHEN
Los Alamos

We urge the citizens of Los Alamos, and the members of our County Council, to support Council Vice Chair Susan O’Leary’s request for an independent audit of the county’s personnel policies and how they are executed.

While some will respond to Councilor O’Leary’s request with resistance, what she is proposing is the right thing to do. Recent lawsuits against the county have added up to millions of dollars. It is incumbent upon the citizens of Los Alamos, and the County Council members who represent us,
