Letter To The Editor: Thank You To Los Alamos And White Rock Community From Greg Fisher’s Family

The family of Greg Fisher will always be grateful to the friends, neighbors, colleagues, council members, teachers, counselors, and young people who made his life and his daughter’s joyful and productive in Los Alamos and White Rock.

Your response to his tragic early death has been heartwarming, comforting, and reassuring to us. We honor each of you who played a role in Greg’s life as the County’s Economic Vitality Administrator and in the daily lives of both Greg and Maya.

Thanks especially to those who grieved alongside us. The private words and public voices of the gathering at the ski lodge Read More

Letter To The Editor: Voters … Now Is Your Chance

By DOUG PIPPIN
Los Alamos

I applaud Mr. Khal Spencer’s letter to the editor concerning the four council members with their NO vote for an independent audit. As the old saying goes, “Where there’s smoke, there’s a fire”, and what I, like Mr. Spencer and others, would like to know is, “why the no vote?”, do we have a fire deep within our county?

I know the money spent on the past law suits by us, the county, were paid for by our insurer(s), but we pay the insurance premiums, and at last reported our insurance premiums had not gone up due to these

Letter To The Editor: Lacking An Outside Audit … Doubt Remains

By KHAL SPENCER
Los Alamos

I am disappointed that Council voted 4-2 against commissioning an independent audit of the County’s personnel policies. This follows some high profile, successful lawsuits against the county and the loss of former acting Police Chief Randy Foster, who was fired, as I understand, due to his handling of a potentially catastrophic personnel situation.

I counted Randy as a friend as well as a Chief, so like Councilor James Chrobocinski, I am somewhat conflicted. That said, I think this was the wrong decision.

County spokespeople can attempt to assuage our concerns Read More

Letter To The Editor: I Endorse Councilor Pete Sheehey

By SHERIFF MARCO V. LUCERO
Los Alamos

This letter is in regards to the announcement of my support for Councilor Pete Sheehey in his re-election efforts.

As your elected Sheriff and having worked on your behalf for the past five and a half years, I have had the opportunity to meet and know past and present council members. During this time, most of you have seen, read and some of you have heard the lack of support for the Los Alamos County Sheriff’s Office by certain council members. The Sheriff’s Office provides services to the community Los Alamos County with little

Letter To The Editor: Thanks To Those Who Made Spring Arts And Crafts Fair A Success

MARLANE HAMILTON
Executive Director
Los Alamos Arts Council

The hard work of many dedicated volunteers resulted in a successful Northern New Mexico Spring Arts and Crafts Fair. In addition to the Los Alamos Arts Council, the fair benefited from the efforts of LAVA members who posted flyers around Los Alamos before the fair.

We also wish to thank Los Alamos County Parks Department for mowing and trimming the grounds around Ashley Pond, as well as cleaning up trash during the fair. Many people commented about how nice Read More

Readers View: Why There Is Only One Choice For District Attorney

By TARIN NIX
Los Alamos

With the craziness at the national level and so much focus on our legislative races, it is easy to forget about some of the crucial down ballot races happening.

Although my political consulting firm is not representing Maria Sanchez-Gagne’s campaign, I am personally endorsing her for District Attorney and am asking for a moment of your time to explain why she deserves your support as well.

Maria Sanchez-Gagne

With a district that spans the counties of Los Alamos, Rio Arriba and Santa Fe – experience is beyond critical. From 1996-2000, Maria served Read More

Letter To The Editor: Jane Goodall’s Chimpanzees Are Looking More Civilized Than Us These Days

By BOB FUSELIER
Los Alamos

In a recent Rolling Stone article entitled: “The Line That May Have Won Hilary Clinton the Nomination,” Matt Taibbi makes a valid argument for the role that racism played in the financial crisis of 2008. His argument begins with Clinton’s question at a rally aimed at her opponent, Bernie Sanders: “If we broke up the big banks tomorrow would that end racism?”

While there is amble evidence that people of color were specifically targeted during the sub-prime fiasco, it appears that Taibbi is suggesting not that greed and racism are tied together but rather that the marginalized Read More

Letter To The Editor: Brush And Weeds Aren’t Only Things People Leave On Sidewalks

By CHRISTINE WEAVER
Los Alamos

I appreciate the information about keeping sidewalks clear of brush and weeds. However; these aren’t the only things people leave on sidewalks.

My dog and I walk every morning in the area around Urban Park and people leave the large trash bins, kids’ basketball stands, and even cars protruding from their driveways on the sidewalk. It means that we have to walk into the street to get around. Sometimes it’s on a curve and drivers can’t see us until the last minute.

I’m not sure if there’s an ordinance for these obstructions

Letter To The Editor: Don’t Take Photos On Lab Property

By GAIL LITTLE
Los Alamos

After three months I am picking up this letter I wrote and didn’t send so that I can warn others in Los Alamos about what can happen if you take a photo from the wrong place. I can’t warn tourists who might get caught in this mistake, but I can tell locals.

I had a 7 o’clock meeting at the lab cafeteria. When I came out, the mountains were gorgeous. I got my camera out of the car and walked to the end of the parking lot to take a photograph.

A guy in a pickup stopped and yelled that I wasn’t allowed to take pictures there,
