Letter To The Editor: Chris Chandler’s Education, Experience And Background Needed On Council

By MIKE WHEELER
Los Alamos

Chris Chandler, Los Alamos County Council candidate, has worked for many years to move Los Alamos forward. Her analysis of legislative matters at the county and state have been invaluable to the legislature and county. For these reasons and many others, please join me in supporting Chris for Council.

Chris’s previous service on county council guided our community during some very difficult times. She however, remained a constant steady voice of reason. Her education, experience and background are needed on the council. Legal issues continue to come up at the council Read More

Letter To The Editor: Second In Series On Los Alamos County Water Distribution System

By GEORGE CHANDLER
Los Alamos

This is the second (link) in a series of letters regarding the Los Alamos County water distribution system and what I have learned about it following my research after two leaks in the delivery lines that traverse my back yard, in February 2014 and May 2015.

Here I will describe the remarkable rules of the DPU that shift part of the burden of their failure to address the problem of aging water lines to homeowners.

The canonical arrangement for water distribution is a water distribution line (“main”) in the street, a delivery line from the main to the water

Letter To The Editor – Congratulations To The Olions

By JOHN and JESS CULLINAN
Los Alamos

Congratulations to the Olions on their successful production of Spamalot, and on their well deserved nominations for the inaugural Popejoy Awards.

It’s exciting to see the hard work and devotion of our talented youth pay off in such a rewarding way.

We note in the recent news coverage that many of the people who shared in the responsibility for the success of the production were not recognized, and knowing that theatre is first and foremost a collaborative art form, we think they should be mentioned:

  • Jason Rutledge for his skillful musical direction;
  • Patrick

Letter To The Editor: North Mesa Roundabout

By TONY AMSDEN
Los Alamos

This is in response to “Someone Not Expecting Any Changes”, regarding the North Mesa Roundabout:

Welcome to the entitled world of today. Since around 1960, Americans have been raised to have a high level of self-esteem and a high sense of entitlement. That governs the way a number of them tend to drive today, oblivious of the needs and rights of others.

Dealing with this mentality on the road can be a real challenge. And if you are unhappy now with speeders going around the North Mesa roundabout at 50 mph, just wait until Los Alamos gets another roundabout

By LENNY KROSINSKY
President of New Mexico Racewalkers

The New Mexico Racewalkers Club hosted a racewalking clinic April 30 at the Betty Ehart Senior Center.

A total of 14 people attended from Los Alamos, White Rock, Albuquerque and Belen. The clinic began at 10 a.m., with a lecture, video and demonstration of the rules and technique of racewalking.

Despite a rather foreboding start to the day with a mix of snow/rain and strong winds, the skies cleared and the sun came out just in time for clinic participants to move outdoors to practice

Letter To The Editor: Roundabout Battles – The Root Causes?

By WILLIAM C. MEAD
Los Alamos

Roundabout battles: the root causes?

Why does Los Alamos find itself, time after time, over a decades-long period, in roundabout battles? I think it’s a result of double-vision that exists at a deep level among both county planners and citizens. My view of this underlying schism has been formed as a result of participating in two expensive roundabout contests, and through second-hand knowledge as an observer of several previous battles.

For convenience, I’ll call these two visions the “utopian” and the “utilitarian”. First, I’ll sketch the visions of each group.

Law Day Op-Ed By Supreme Court Chief Justice Daniels

By Chief Justice Charles W. Daniels
New Mexico Supreme Court

As we celebrate national Law Day on May 1 and Juror Appreciation Week in New Mexico, I would like to recognize the vital role each citizen plays in preserving the rule of law by serving on juries in our state courts.

New Mexico courts each year summon about 10 percent of the state’s adult population to participate in jury service. Along with the ballot box, the jury box is one of the two most direct forms of citizen participation in our system of self-government.

Letter To The Editor: Drivers Ignoring Yield Sign At North Mesa Roundabout

By Someone Not Expecting Any Changes

On April 25, a “Concerned Parent” asked that people driving near Los Alamos Middle School slow down. Immediately following this letter, I have seen LAPD officers sitting at the school entrance monitoring drivers.

I have driven past this school every weekday morning for three years and have never seen anyone speeding. However, by the time I get down the hill to the roundabout, I see parents and plenty of other drivers on their way to the middle school plowing through the roundabout at 50 mph and never once slowing down to yield to anyone. I guess they Read More

Letter To The Editor: Real Victims Of Middle-East Turmoil

By DOUG REILLY
Los Alamos

We hear every day of the continuing suffering of the people of the Middle-East. The people are the real victims, especially those of Iraq and Syria.

The USA, Russia, and Saudi Arabia fight and kill for a variety of reasons, and more innocent civilians die or leave in hundreds of thousands and die on the seas.

The USA supports certain rebel groups and demands President Assad step down or be removed before we will stop fighting. The Saudis claim to fight the Islamic State that they support fully, because the IS is a Sunni
