Letter To The Editor: Hummingbird Dearth An Enigma

By CAROL STATON
Los ALamos

Mr. Marinuzzi, thank you so much for letting me know I am not losing my mind.

When I wrote my first letter about not having any hummers this year, all the replies were from folks having more than ever. I thought perhaps I was doing something wrong. My experience has been much the same as yours. First ones arrive in April or May and then the hordes arrive in early July.

Every summer I would be filling three 32 oz. feeders twice a day from July till end of September. I have had one feeder, which I filled only halfway, out since July 12 now and once in a while I see two hummers. The Read More

Letter To The Editor: Disappearing Hummingbirds…

By JOHN MARINUZZI
Los Alamos

With three large Hummingbird feeders, we have enjoyed watching Hummers for decades. However, this year they have all but disappeared.

We live on the Canyon side of Pajarito Acres. In years past, we usually see the Hummers start to arrive during the second week of April, increase in number to about 15 to 25 by the end of May, and remain at that number until they leave in early September.

This year the first birds arrived on April 12, increased to about 12 by mid-May, and steadily decreased since then. Today we are down to two Rufous.

Column: Our Flag, My Flag

By VERNON N. KERR

Our Flag, My Flag

Here is hardly anything more beautiful than to be on a troopship coming into harbor with all those American flags flying. I’m home, I’m home, I’m home.

From the time I was a 12-year-old old Boy Scout I remember being respectful to the flag that represents so many good things about the United States of America.

I am a first generation American as were so many of my classmates. We were Scots, Italian, Yugoslavian, Mexican, Polish, Japanese, Irish and more. It was a great time and a great place to grow up and every morning we recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Some Read More

Letter To The Editor: Consequences Of BPU’s Vote And Suggested Obligations Of County Council

ROBERT FALCO, PhD.
Los Alamos

The Los Alamos Board of Public Utilities (BPU) has just voted (Wednesday evening) to keep the coal fired San Juan power station alive and running for at least seven more years.

If they voted no, PNM said it couldn’t go forward, implying that San Juan would be shut down. Los Alamos still has it in its power to say NO at the Los Alamos County Council vote July 28. The irony is that the DPU will pay more for San Juan Power than for power it buys on the open market. And, today coal is more expensive than either solar or wind.

There were tremendous contradictions during Read More

Letter To The Editor: ‘Dearth Of Humming Birds Lately?’

By JIM GOURDOUX
Los Alamos

Since there have been a few letters regarding hummingbirds this year, here is our input.

We live in Pajarito Acres. We have seen more hummingbirds this year than we have ever seen before. We have four feeders out and are filling them almost every day.

We have also had a wider variety. We see Black Chinned, Rufous, Calliope and Annas every day.

Letter To The Editor: Heads-up To Quemazon Homeowners

By CHRISTINA CAUDILL
Los Alamos

I want to give my former neighbors in the Quemazon communities a heads-up about some exorbitant fees you may be unaware that you will face when/if you decide to sell you home within the Quemazon Master Association or its Woodlands Homeowner Association (HOA). I suspect the other HOAs within Quemazon have similar fees.

We recently sold our home on Sinuoso and much to our surprise we were hit with an additional $800+ expense from the management company of the Quemazon Master and Woodlands HOAs added to our closing costs.

Letter To The Editor: Response To ‘Blurred Lines’

By RHETA MOAZZAMI
Los Alamos

In regard to Abe Dispenette’s letter to the editor “Blurred Lines” published in the Los Alamos Daily Post July 16, 2015, I would advise readers to go see Snopes.com and search for “baby parts for sale.”

Snopes claims this video was done by the same people responsible for smearing Acorn with actors on a video. A quote from the Snopes article, ” …things are not always as partisan zealots portray them through highly selective editing of reality. Sometimes a fuller truth is found on the cutting room floor.”

Letter To The Editor: Blurred Lines

By ABE DISPENNETTE

Los Alamos

During my service in the Army and after multiple combat tours one of the realities that has stuck with me the most was our country’s utmost care for life.

I have held the hands of soldiers as they passed away because they chose to take their convoys across known roads with IED’s as opposed to driving through a town and potentially causing collateral damage.  Soldiers would also load our wounded enemies into the same medical evacuations as our own soldiers and allow them treatment from the most excellent surgeons as Read More
