Letter To The Editor: Former LANL Physicist Discusses Israel’s Nuclear Weapons

By DOUGLAS REILLY, Ph.D.
Retired from LANL, US DOE, IAEA, and EURATOM

I realize that the Los Alamos Daily Post usually does not cover national news. However, I believe most of its readers are aware of the Iran nuclear talks and Israel’s, the United States’ and the world’s desire that Iran not develop nuclear weapons.

Unfortunately, very little is heard about Israel’s hundreds of nuclear weapons (atomic and hydrogen) and its ability to deliver them anywhere in the world, including the USA.

My wife, Dotty, and I are residents of Los Alamos. For 38 years I was employed as a physicist in Los Alamos

Letter To The Editor: Thanks For Saving Our Dog

By ANDY and JUDY WHITE
Los Alamos

Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped rescue our dog, Sofie, from the bottom of Barrancas Canyon while we were away on vacation.

Sofie’s adventure began last Sunday when she escaped our yard and climbed and/or fell into the canyon. Neighbors, friends, animal control Ofc. Tom Beyers, and our very conscientious dog-sitter searched high and low on Barranca Mesa, but by nightfall could find no trace of our wayward dog.

Miraculously, our neighbor Mary Langworthy heard Sofie barking in the canyon early Monday morning and called Los Alamos police dispatch. Responding Read More

Letter To The Editor: Bobcat On Perimeter Trail

By LAURIE WATERS
Los Alamos

Today just before 6 a.m. on my morning walk, just south of the intersection of the Mitchell Trail and the Perimeter Trail, I saw a bobcat.

I was heading north and heard a noise like something heavy making a quick sprint through the brush off to my left. It must have been hunting, but it saw me and stopped.

We stared at each other for about a minute – beautiful animal, then it turned and walked away over a little hill and disappeared. We were probably about 25 feet apart.  Read More

Letter To The Editor: ‘Tres Parks Nacionales’

By JERRY BEERY
Los Alamos

This is a suggestion for the branding of Los Alamos.

First I must say how much I dislike the term branding. It suggests a hot iron applied to my backside but we may be stuck with the term as long as the county is spending money on branding.

Los Alamos has a golden opportunity to become a serious tourist destination. In the last year we have added two National Parks, the Valles Caldera and the Manhattan Project. Since Bandelier is also part of the National Park System, we can claim to have three National Parks in the vicinity.

That is quite unusual and

Letter To The Editor: A Few Numbers For Rain Harvest

By RICHARD NEBEL
Los Alamos

I have been harvesting rainwater for several years here in Los Alamos, and I know many other people have been doing the same.

Before investing in a system to do that, it’s worthwhile to run the numbers. First of all, we have about 18 inches of rainfall annually in Los Alamos. For a typical home, that translates into about 20,000 gallons of water that hits your roof every year.

A standard water sprinkler puts out about 5 gallons a minute. I water my garden for about half an hour every other day. That’s 150 gallons per watering. I would like to store enough water to Read More

Letter To The Editor: ‘A New Harvest’

By JAMES ROBINSON
Los Alamos

This week, I enjoyed falling asleep to the sound of rainfall outside my window. It was my surprise this morning to wake up and have rain continuing to fall.

As I drove to work, I took notice of how much rain water was flowing off houses, businesses, and county buildings.

Realizing that the water flowing off these structures is only destined to travel to a storm drain and out into a canyon, I thought to myself, “Why don’t we utilize more rain water harvesting here in Los Alamos?”

A quick search on the Internet produced

Letter To The Editor: Brown Suitcase Tossed Over Cliff

Los Alamos

Perhaps the person who recently smashed video and audio cassettes and tossed them over a cliff (along with a brown suitcase) near Meadow Lane between S. Todd Loop and Paul Place didn’t realize that this is a favorite rock climbing area and that we would find the trash and clean it up, forgoing an afternoon of climbing. (The cliff is fondly known as “The Old New Place”.)

Anyway, following is a list of tapes, and if anyone recognizes Read More

Letter To The Editor: Inspector Bag-it To Enforce Ban

By LISA SHIN
Los Alamos

I am Inspector Bag-it! I wish to be the County’s new inspector for the plastic bag ban. I am anxiously awaiting the Council’s final decision.

I am hopeful that they will ignore the citizen surveys and the recommendation made by the Economic Sustainability Board. I promise to enforce the ordinance and vow to make sure that all businesses and citizens are in compliance. Let me remind you that without enforcement, we will likely not see compliance.

For example, Seattle Public Utilities has not been given enough resources to enforce their bag ban. In fact, the Department Read More
