Letter To The Editor: Lots Of Hummers In My Yard

By DONNA REIL
Los Alamos

I was responding to the letter about the hummingbirds being a bit sparse this year. I have had a lot of different hummers in my yard, I put out two feeders on the side of my house and one out front.

The two on the side draw the most hummers, I had at least 10 yesterday swarming and having a good time, fighting over the feeders.

They even come close to my hand and face as I am taking pictures of them. I think there are more this year than last year!

They sure make my summer fun! Read More

Letter to the Editor: Reflection On Our Community

By CYNDI WELLS
Race Director for the 2015 Tour de Los Alamos Bicycle Race

This past weekend, I was once again reminded of the greatness of our community in Los Alamos.

As the race director for the 43rd Annual Tour de Los Alamos Bicycle Race July 12, I had the privilege to observe how businesses, groups, individuals, and governmental entities can all work well together. I was honored to be able to serve as race director for Tour de Los Alamos; this race has become a tradition in New Mexico bicycle racing thorough the hard work of many over the years.

Many thanks to the businesses of CrossFit Los Alamos,

Letter To The Editor: Dearth Of Hummingbirds Lately?

By CAROL STATON
Los Alamos

I am wondering if everyone in Los Alamos is experiencing a dearth of hummingbirds this summer.

I have always had to fill three feeders once or twice a day each by this time in the summer and now I am changing the sugar water once a week in just one feeder just to keep it fresh in case.

In early May I had many little ones that were very hungry but just for a couple of weeks. Since then I have rarely seen one. I keep a record of when the great hordes arrive each year with the feisty rufous ones and never have they

Letter To The Editor: Unknown Costs Of Los Alamos County Continuing Its Ownership In San Juan Facility

By ROBERT FALCO, PhD.
Los Alamos

The purpose of this letter is to alert you that the actual costs of continuing to use the San Juan facility to provide electricity may be much higher than the current costs of 5.5 cents/kWh.

The Decommissioning report (which will be discussed at 5:30 p.m. today and voted upon) entitled “San Juan Decommissioning and Trust Funds Agreement Among …..” attempts to delineated the costs and responsibilities of the parties involved. Examination of the report exposes three reasons for likely cost increases from San Juan:

  • pollution controls must be added to abate the NOx;

Letter To The Editor: We Are In Danger Of Forgetting

By ELOY J. GALLEGOS
Knoxville, Tenn.

Whoa! Just one minuto. Por favor! Before moving forward with the funding for National Historic Parks at three Manhattan Project locations maybe we should look at the proposal more carefully.

What is the legacy regarding the Manhattan Project and its offsprings? What have we inherited? Today, the atomic locations of the Manhattan Project are insidious deserts of toxic horror. Nothing within some of these spaces can be taken as safe and not one considered immune.

These places, at one time totaling 79 in number, consisted of noxious regions,

Letter To The Editor: Not Well Known But Worrisome

By DOUG REILLY
Los Alamos

I write this in response to Terry Goldman’s reaction to my earlier letter. I agree this is unlikely to occur; but I would relate the information below as a worrisome fact; well documented by the BBC, but not well known:

As the then Prime Minister, Golda Meir is interviewed by the BBC’s Alan Hart, who, at a certain point, says ’excuse me Madame Prime Minister, have I understood you correctly that Israel is prepared to destroy the world, if ever it feels in danger of falling?’ Without a pause or blink of an eye, she replies, “you have understood me perfectly!”

Letter To The Editor: Remember Israeli Attack Of 1967

By ERICA WISSINGER
Los Alamos

A correction may be needed to Terry Goldman’s letter of July 12, where it is stated “anyone who thinks that there is the remotest chance that Israel would attack the USA, with or without a nuclear weapon, is displaying little evidence of anything approaching realistic critical thinking.”

It is well documented that Israeli air and naval forces attacked the USS Liberty on June 8, 1967, in international waters and severely damaged the ship as it visibly and clearly sailed under the American flag. Read More

Letter To The Editor: Displays Lack Of Critical Thinking

By TERRY GOLDMAN
Los Alamos

To save time, I stop reading opinion pieces as soon as I reach the first nonsensical statement.

For Doug Reilly’s Sunday letter, it was very early on: “… very little is heard about Israel’s hundreds of nuclear weapons… and its ability to deliver them anywhere in the world, including the USA.”

While probably factual, anyone who thinks that there is the remotest chance that Israel would attack the USA, with or without a nuclear weapon, is displaying little evidence of anything approaching realistic critical thinking.

Letter To The Editor: County Needs To Leave San Juan Coal Generating Station – Go Solar To Cut Costs

By ROBERT FALCO, PhD
Los Alamos

Los Alamos County has a unique opportunity to make a quantum leap into the future of clean renewable energy.

It is at a cross roads, where it must decide to cut its losses by selling or abandoning its share of the San Juan power generating station to PNM, rather than pay millions to put pollution abatements on it, and instead use these monies to establish a PV solar farm.

The economics of moving away from the San Juan power plant, if LAC acts now, can save a lot of money. And in seven years, only seven years, all monies spent now on pollution controls will be wasted because the Read More
