Letter To The Editor: ‘LAHS Seniors Pass On Traditional Financial Donation Onto Upcoming Freshman Class’

By BERNADETTE LAURITZEN
Los Alamos

The class of 2015 graduated Saturday and in full Topper tradition, left a gift to the school in their name as they go.

The class this year has worked with staff and volunteers to make their gift far reaching, in order to impact the youth of the community as young as elementary with display holders that will house resources for students.

LAHS students Jyelyn Bold and Kimberly Pestovich represent the senior class gift committee for 2015 and have worked to make their idea become a reality. How do

Letter To The Editor: ‘Some Thoughts On Global Warming Simulations’

By RICHARD NEBEL
Los Alamos

Since everybody seems to be putting in their two cents on global warming, here’s mine.

The equations which describe climate change are a coupled set of hyperbolic partial differential equations. Hyperbolic partial differential equations have the property that all solutions diverge (popularly known as the “butterfly effect”).

So how far ahead might one “rigorously” predict the climate?

About 5-10 days, or about the same length of time as the weather. In short,

Letter To The Editor: SFNF Proposing To Lease Public Lands To Private Interests For Geothermal Exploration

By SABINE SHURTER
Jemez Springs

The Santa Fe National Forest is proposing to lease public lands surrounding SLP, La Cueva, Thompson Ridge to private interests for geothermal exploration.

There will be only two public meetings in Santa Fe and Cuba but not in Jemez Springs, a location much easier to reach for many residents most impacted.

Sierra Los Pinos, La Cueva and Thompson Ridge will be in the middle of these activities. Your future use of public lands and your enjoyment of the woods surrounding your little piece of heaven may be impacted by these activities. And a few geothermal wells in the Read More

Letter To The Editor: ‘Did Mr. Antos Read My Entire Letter?’

By JOEL M. WILLIAMS
Los Alamos

Apparently, Mr. Antos did not bother to read my entire letter, but went off on a tangent after seeing the words “greenhouse effect of CO2 generated by massive levels of coal and petroleum combustion to produce electricity makes common scientific sense”.

He did not bother to note my very next sentence, which stated, “It is the magnitude of the effect of such pollutions on a global scale and the non-human effects that are the issues.”

I spent the rest of the letter addressing changes in the global temperature of “mother earth”

Snodgrass: Science Embroiled In Controversy And Doubt … Is National Security At Risk?

By ROGER SNODGRASS
Los Alamos Daily Post

Matthew Hughes’ 21st century science fiction/fantasy novels about Henghis Hapthorn are set in the far future, but the plots are laced with insightful allegorical connotations that are very much a reflection of the present day.

Hapthorn, a planet-hopping private eye called a “discriminator,” makes his living solving problems for the wealthy aristocracy of Old Earth.

However, the real McGuffin for the series, as Hollywood calls the plot-enabling device in a movie, has to do with a fundamental transformation, which seems to be shifting reality Read More

Letter To The Editor: ‘Time To Invest In Our Families And Communities’

By JACQUE GARCIA
Bernalillo County

Much has been made of America’s crumbling infrastructure. Rusting bridges and crumbling highways are only a part of our neglect. A much bigger part, and one that many of us don’t see is the neglect of inner-city communities, distressed schools and long forgotten playgrounds.

The recent protests in Baltimore, much like Albuquerque’s protests last year, may have been triggered by unjust police violence, but are much more deeply rooted in decades of neglecting our families and communities, especially communities of color.

Letter To The Editor: Long History Of Naysayers

By JOHN GONZALES
Los Alamos

Dear Mr. Gerald Antos (letter), Mr. Joel Williams (letter), and anyone else who will listen:

There are in this world and in this present time naysayers and also holders of half-truths. Mr. Antos, you would have an answer for a riddle of Nature and Humankind and in so doing ask that scientific basis be called upon to provide an answer.

The true nature of scientific inquiry is based on the riddle that must be answered and you have spoken well in riddling the riddle!

Mr. Antos, you riddle. Mr. Joel Williams: “If man’s pollution is the only one responsible Read More
