Letter To The Editor: Hold Judiciary Accountable

By Rep. Paul Pacheco
Albuquerque

Since the tragic death of Rio Rancho Police officer Gregg Benner, we’ve heard a lot about judicial accountability, oversight and transparency, all of which are woefully lacking when it comes to keeping violent repeat offenders off our streets.

Not long after our community was struck with the news of this travesty, we discovered that the career criminal accused in this crime was facing three indictments but instead was given early release from a possible 13-year prison sentence.

The deal that allowed Andrew Romero free represents

Letter To The Editor: Free Trade Could Help New Mexico Oil And Gas Industry

By PAUL J. GESSING, president

New Mexico’s Rio Grande Foundation

When it comes to New Mexico’s economy, there are no bigger players than the oil and gas industries which, combined, contribute 31 percent of the general fund.

Natural gas prices remain at historically-depressed levels. Since spiking during the winter of 2014 when the East Coast of the United States saw a series of cold snaps, the Henry Hub price has been on a steady decline. Throughout 2015, prices have been below the historically-low $3/mmbtu line.

Oil prices on the other hand, were elevated until July

Letter To The Editor: Hopefully LANL Will Reconsider

By JEFFREY ROBERTS
White Rock

Los Alamos National Laboratory regularly purports to be supportive of Northern New Mexico, Los Alamos, and the surrounding communities.

They say how much they support local business, people, and outreach. I know they have a community outreach department for just such publicity.

So what do they do to express this support? They permanently close local salvage operations. They take what has been an institution at LANL, a program that has run for some 50 years or more, and give it to a Texas based company geared to selling to professional businesses.

I have no

Letter To The Editor: A Quick Search Leads To Questions

By ED BIRNBAUM
Los Alamos

I am not an historian, but a quick search for Daren Savage’s statement, published in the Los Alamos Daily Post June 19, “Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.”, comes back with the following statement about the quote from Wikipedia:

“Widely attributed to Franklin on the Internet, sometimes without the second sentence. It is not found in any of his known writings, and the word “lunch” is not known to have appeared anywhere in English literature until Read More

Letter To The Editor: About Representative Government

JOEL M. WILLIAMS
Los Alamos

Daren Savage, in a letter to the Los Alamos Daily Post, is correct in stating that our government is a “Constitutional Republic”.

Within this system, representatives are, however, elected by a majority of voters through a democratic process. Within the bounds of the pertinent constitution or charter, it is to be expected by the voters that those representatives actually represent those who elected them.

Letter To The Editor: ‘Our System Is Supposed To Be A Constitutional Republic, NOT A Democracy!’

By DAREN SAVAGE
Los Alamos

I must write to correct Joel Williams in his letter to the editor titled, “Our System Is Supposed To Be A Democracy.”

The United States was founded as a Constitutional Republic. No where in our founding fathers’ writings can be found the word “democracy.”

But, Benjamin Franklin expressed it most succinctly, “Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.”

Review: So What About Jurassic World?

Review of Jurassic World by Thomas Holtz
Submitted by Ralph E. Chapman, Los Alamos

OK Los Alamosians,

As I have yet to see Jurassic World because of other commitments (soon, I hope) and there is lots of stuff (and crap) circulating around the web, I have assembled the review of a good friend of mine – Dr. Tom Holtz, a.k.a. King of the Dinosaur Geeks – from his Facebook posts and submit them here for you to read. He gave me permission to send them to the LADP.

These days it is almost impossible to keep half up with dinosaur stuff unless you do it full time and

Letter To The Editor: Our System Is Supposed To Be A Democracy

By JOEL M. WILLIAMS
Los Alamos

I did not comment in the County’s Forum before and see no need to do so now. The opinion of the vast majority of those who commented was clear to me.

Our system is supposed to be a democracy. This means that the will of the majority is to be legislated, and not the will of a minority who would dictate/mandate that “their morality” and their view of the “right thing to do” be imposed.

On April 14, the County Council received a citizen petition requesting that “Council pass an Ordinance prohibiting retail establishments from distributing Read More

Letter To The Editor: Door To Door Scammer

By David Palmer
Los Alamos

This evening a nice young man came to my door in White Rock selling children’s books, with the story that he was financing an internship to go to Boeing to restore a P51 Mustang. He said that he lived just a few blocks away. Since I don’t have children he said that I could also pay for the books to be donated to a children’s hospital.

After he left, I googled the company “experiencesales.com“, and found that they are persistent scammers. I even found somebody else who had evidently met
