Letter to the Editor: Marco Lucero For Sheriff

By TERRY GOLDMAN
Los Alamos

This is an unsolicited endorsement for the re-election of Marco Lucero as sheriff of Los Alamos County.

I have personally witnessed Sheriff Lucero’s commitment to reassuring citizens of Los Alamos of their safety at a public event, when concerns (warranted or not) arose. He did so freely, without even a direct request for a supplemental security presence, on his own initiative, and without any recompense. At the time, the LAPD, although they also contributed, could not provide the same level of a reassuring physical security presence.

In my opinion, this Read More

McKerley: Why I’m Running For County Council

Why I’m Running For County Council
By BILL MCKERLEY

I’m Bill McKerley, and I’m a candidate for the County Council. My wife and I have been extremely fortunate to live and rear our children in this great community. I retired from the Lab after 34 years, serving as group leader and program manager. I am a US Army veteran and served in Korea during the Vietnam War era.

Since moving here in 1978, we have attended the Los Alamos Church of Christ. I have been active in youth programs through our congregation and in the community. I have been involved in Parent Teacher Organizations during our children’s Read More

Milder: Why I’m Running For Assessor

Why I’m Running For Assessor
By KEN MILDER

People often ask me why I am running for county assessor. This is an easy question to answer: I get great personal satisfaction from public service. I am, for example, completing my second term on the board of Los Alamos Retirement Community, the non-profit organization that owns and operates Sombrillo Nursing Home and Aspen Ridge Lodge Assisted Living Community. LARC is an $8.5 million per year operation and I’ve had the pleasure of being its president for three of the six years I’ve served on the board.

Due to term limits, the current assessor, JoAnn Johnson,

Letter to the Editor: Election Years Always Make Me Feel Good

By DONALD WILLERTON
Los Alamos

I’m always happy during an election year. The LADailyPost, for example, has been a continuous stream of encouraging, positive descriptions of how our Congressional representatives have been productive for New Mexico. In fact, since Oct. 13 of last year, there have been (about) 108 citations of Tom Udall, 96 for Martin Heinrich, 41 for Ben Ray Lujan, 16 for Michelle Lujan Grisham, and nine or so for Steve Pierce. In every picture, the smiles are broad and the eyes are beaming.

Why start counting with Oct. 13? Because that’s when the LADailyPost reported a national Read More

LAPS Superintendent Gene Schmidt Issues Open Letter To Staff And Community

Open Letter to Staff and Community:
By Superintendent Gene Schmidt
Los Alamos Public Schools

An article in the Sunday Edition of Los Alamos Monitor (DeRoma, 2014), posed the question of illegal drug use in our community. The drug awareness event, which was held in Smith Auditorium, presented an opportunity for community members to voice concerns on illegal drug use.

As Superintendent of the Los Alamos Public Schools, I would be naïve to say that drugs have not made their way into our schools and our community. But in saying this, I would state very affirmatively school staff and administration Read More

Letter to the Editor: We Need Judges Willing To Hold Criminals Accountable

By MICHAEL and CATHERINE RAGSDALE
Los Alamos

Enough is enough! It is time for a change in the first judicial court.

We need a judge who is willing to recognize that a victim of a crime should at least have some rights as well as the respect of the court. We need a judge who is willing to hold a criminal accountable for their crimes and quit “plea dealing” them back on to the streets to continue their criminal careers.

Judge Sheri Raphaelson’s sentencing record is atrocious! Her “catch and release” program belongs in the New Mexico Game and Fish Department, not in the Read More

Letter to the Editor: Important Decisions In Midterm Elections

By KYLE WHEELER
Los Alamos

Not many people pay attention to the midterm elections, yet we have some very important decisions to make as we cast our ballots.

One of them is deciding on a new judge to send to the New Mexico Court of Appeals. I will support Kerry Kiernan because of his 30 years of legal experience serving New Mexicans. He began his career as a New Mexico public defender and later worked for a highly respect law firm in Albuquerque. His experience is not only broad but it is deep. His professional temperament and work ethic, and his ability to listen to all sides of an issue, make him an excellent Read More

Letter to the Editor: Constitutional Amendment #5 Is A Finagle That Needs To Be Defeated

By VERNON N. KERR
Former State Representative
Former CABINET Secretary for Finance and administration
Former Member of the State Investment Council

Constitutional Amendment #5 is a sleeper that might well pass because it is not easy to understand.

It allows investment of the Land Grant Permanent Fund without the protection of the Prudent Man Rule that has governed the State Investment Council (SIC) management  of the Fund  and served us well since statehood. This rule states that one would make investments of trust money as one would for their own portffolio with essentially minimum
