Letter to the Editor: About ‘Alex Kirk Day’

By BENJAMIN BACA
Los Alamos

After reading the story about Alex Kirk Day, I have to say his accomplishments are awesome. It’s great to see the local kid do so well.

However, I don’t recall seeing something about a day for a wounded local soldier. That we would celebrate a basketball player before recognizing a soldier who volunteered for a position that risks more than knee injuries is a systemic illness of the US culture.

Alex’s accomplishments are noteworthy, and I congratulate him. I certainly don’t blame him. This is simply a symptom of the spotlight-grabbing, Read More

Letter to the Editor: New Smith’s Displays Unimpressive Bear Picture Selection

By NICOLAS PILAT
Los Alamos

Although the new Smith’s Marketplace does a great service for this small town, there is one caveat that warps ‘What is’ into ‘What should be.’

The new Smith’s rights many of the wrongs that once plagued shopping on the Hill, but one wound is left unclosed. The new Smith’s Marketplace, in all its grandeur, fails to offer Los Alamos shoppers with a satisfactory selection of bear pictures.

Picture this: You have a birthday in the family coming up, and Uncle Bob loves bears. Hey, why don’t you send him a picture of a bear? Unfortunately, Uncle Bob’s love for bears is so Read More

Letter to the Editor: Los Alamos Arts Council Says Thanks

By MARGARET MCINTYRE
MCT Chair, LAAC

On behalf of the Los Alamos Arts Council, I would like to thank the cast members of Missoula Children’s Theatre’s production of “Blackbeard the Pirate” for their wonderful performance.

The Arts Council would like to thank the County of Los Alamos for co-sponsoring this event, which was also partially funded by a grant from the New Mexico Children’s Foundation.

We would also like to thank all the parents and friends of the cast who attended the play on Saturday, as well as the staff of Crossroads Bible Church. They were wonderful to work with and

Letter to the Editor: Some Theatrical License Taken In Manhattan Series Really Unnerved Me

By GERALD M. ANTOS
Los Alamos

While watching this new series, which I enjoyed, I found some theatrical license that really unnerved me.

First the windows in ALL buildings were NEVER left un-blacked out at night and they NEVER would have had a fireworks display. As my Father was one of the military police in Los Alamos in 1943, I was privy to all the gory details of this community at that time!

I did like the series and I thought the casting was good but it still seems as though they made a soap opera out of it and there are enough of them on regular TV without mucking up our history with another one! Since I was

Letter to the Editor: Manhattan Series Has Potential

By JOHN BARTLIT
Los Alamos

On Sunday evening, a crowd joined the Los Alamos Historical Society at Time Out Pizzeria near the Bradbury Science Museum to watch and discuss the first episode of the Manhattan Project TV series.

The series has potential. The show is a serious effort, the production values are good, it captures the times in national feeling and even cars and music, it begins to tell many stories humanly, and the first episode effectively raises conflicts of the times.

The initial conflicts are the tensions between civilians and the military; the deserty, rudimentary setting; the intense Read More

Letter to the Editor: Reckless Driving?

By MICHAEL CARLSON
Los Alamos

I’m disappointed that some people in the community have not learned a lesson about poor behavior behind the wheel, given that one Los Alamos resident is dead and a motorist is facing criminal charges from an accident that occurred earlier this month.

I say this because a driver in a large Dodge 4×4 decided to pass me this evening (July 27) near the Totavi gas station on the way to Main Hill. I was driving about 50 miles per hour, which I assumed to be reasonable. I would estimate his speed to have been double. My mother and I watched as he tailgated another driver Read More

Letter to the Editor: Did I Miss Something?

By TINA DERR
Olympia, Wash.

Since moving to Olympia, Wash., I have been keeping up with the LA news through the Los Alamos Daily Post. Thank you!

However, I must have missed something. Why is there downtown construction going on? Wasn’t there just major work done on the roads/sidewalks on Central just 3-4 (?) years ago to put the cut outs and walkways to slow traffic?

If my recollection is correct, what a waste of money to tear it up and redo.

Please correct me if I am wrong. Read More

Letter to the Editor: Remember White Rock Smith’s

By JANET SANDER
Los Alamos

With all the letters to the editor about the new Smith’s Marketplace, I am surprised that no one has written in support of the White Rock Smith’s.

It would be a huge loss to White Rock if we didn’t have that store. And I fear that we won’t have it if we don’t support it. Yes, it is smaller and less glitzy than the Marketplace, but it has served the majority of our grocery needs for a long time.

It is nice to have the Marketplace to fill the gaps that the smaller Smith’s can’t, but please, White Rock, give your Smith’s the

TALES OF OUR TIMES: Walls Have Ways to Merge Opinions

Walls Have Ways to Merge Opinions

Digging into green issues yields insights that apply remarkably far afield. The ideas encompass war and even atomic bombs.

The panel discussion is fertile ground to begin digging. I do not mean a panel with a lineup of speakers all for one side. I mean a panel of contrasting viewpoints.

The dynamic is very different from that of a speech, a talk show, a slogan, a public rally or a rebuttal in next week’s newspaper. All these customs highlight someone’s half of the story.

By contrast, a panel Read More
