Letter to the Editor: Spruce Up Los Alamos Water Towers

By ZENA THOMAS
Los Alamos

Many of our water towers look like they could use a good clean up or painting. Would it be possible to have the towers both on the hill and those located as you drive up the hill, painted white and then put the beautiful Los Alamos logo on it?

I am referring to the logo that has the mountains inside of the zia. Wouldn’t that look a lot better than the brown or white peeling paint that we now see?

Just a thought. Read More

This Week at the Reel Deal

Column By JIM O’DONNELL
Reel Deal Theater

This week we are opening Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. The Giver, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Guardians of the Galaxy will hold for another week. Into the Storm will end this Thursday.

I did see Into the Storm, and despite poor reviews I enjoyed the film. It kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.

We got foiled again this week by the studios. We were confirmed to open The Hundred-Foot Journey, but Paramount would not let us come off Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles because it was number one nationally. Consequently, we had to push back The Hundred Foot Read More

Letter to the Editor: Weber Family Welcomes Anyone To Their Home Who Knew Trent Johnson

By PAM and JERRY WEBER and family
Los Alamos

Thank you for the kind article about Trent. Thank you also to Steve Wells who so accurately described Trent.

We know just a little more than anyone about what happened. We are in shock, pain and sporadic denial, but I want to welcome anyone who knew Trent or our family to stop buy our home (944 Cheyenne St.).

I can promise you a hug and someone to talk with not just today but when you can or want to talk. Read More

Letter to the Editor: Spikers’ Letter On Judge Parker Foretells Murky Future

By NICOLAS PILAT
Los Alamos

A recent letter written by Dean and Linda Spiker forebodingly states, “With every ungodly law that has been instituted there have been consequences from heaven that have come upon our nation.” At first, I was hesitant to agree with this prediction of American misery. I refused to believe.

Until I woke from my afternoon nap.

My eyes opened, and immediately I noticed my hair was very dirty. I had washed it just this morning, and it degraded into a jellyfish-like mass in less than seven hours! I thought to myself that I must have taken my shower in a dream.

Letter to the Editor: Shocked at Judge Parker’s Decision to Remove Mural

By DEAN and LINDA SPIKER
Aztec, N.M.
Regarding: Court decision concerning the 10 Commandments in Bloomfield, New Mexico.

Honorable Judge Parker:

After reading the decision that you returned concerning the 10 Commandments monument in Bloomfield, N.M., I was shocked.

There were several reasons that I was shocked. One being that since you were appointed by Pres. Ronald Reagan I thought you were a more conservative judge who would have known the history of the United States. The other concern was that the 10 Commandments mural was on the wall in the District Court itself. Therefore,

Yang: Blending Cultural Spices

Blending Cultural Spices

By ELENA YANG
Los Alamos

I certainly need an antidote to my recent columns, which were marked by too much negativity. And since I haven’t come across anything terribly exciting in my usual haunts, I’ll share a personal story.

Sometime after I received my PhD, I was invited by Simmons College to give a talk on diversity, detailed topic to be my own design. I decided to focus on “what it’s like to be a female immigrant in this country.”  The organizer was concerned that this seemed a well-trodden topic, until I gave them my main points, whereupon they welcomed this Read More

Letter to the Editor: Would Be Disservice To Community To Lose Pet Pangea

By MARGARET GUTHRIE
Los Alamos

Please remember to support Pet Pangea. It is a great place to buy everything your pets could possibly need plus they are fun to talk to, have great suggestions and they carry quality merchandise for all pets.

It would be a disservice to our town to lose them because of the “convenience” of getting pet stuff at Smith’s just because it is easier to do while getting groceries.

Pet Pangea has great hours and is right in the middle of our shopping area!

Letter to the Editor: Daughter Is Safe Because Community Turned Into A Family Today

By BECCA and STEVE BETTS
Los Alamos

Dear Los Alamos and White Rock Communities,

Our daughter Rosalina Betts was found this evening by an inspired individual who was being led by God.

It was truly a miracle and just in the nick of time. She is safe and at home with us this evening because a community turned into a family today. We have no idea how many people were involved in searching, mapping trails, fielding phone calls and more, in an effort to find her but we had a constant rush of volunteers of all ages and a steady flow of willing hearts, hugs and prayers.

How the Hen House Turns: Chickens Can Learn

How the Hen House Turns
Chickens Can Learn
Column by Carolyn A. (Cary) Neeper, Ph. D.

In earlier columns, we’ve talked about the importance of routine in animal care. Repetition also counts. It’s hard to tell if a duck understands that they may not go out of the pen, but repeating the same simple phrase may help, along with body language to go with the verbiage. How much is actually learned?

It’s quite clear that the ducks know how to ask me to dig for worms with the trowel. They’ve got me well trained with a quiet “Mack mack” and their close approach. Maybe it counts that I have only broken the trust a few Read More
