Letter To The Editor: Randall Ryti Will Be An Excellent County Councilor

By PETE SHEEHEY
Los Alamos County Councilor

I support Randall Ryti for Los Alamos County Councilor. He came to Los Alamos to build a small business, Neptune and Company, which has thrived. His wife Wendy and he have raised their two children here.

Randall appreciates our unique environment and recreational opportunities, and has actively volunteered to support community groups such as the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC).

I appreciate the balanced approach to problem solving he has taken as a member (and chair) of the County Transportation Board. Randall

Letter To The Editor: James Robinson Will Serve Us Well As County Councilor

By PETE SHEEHEY
Los Alamos County Councilor

I support James Robinson for Los Alamos County Councilor.

James will be a good representative for the growing younger generation in this town. Having grown up and lived most of his life here, he has an appreciation of many things that both young and old people like about living in Los Alamos, such as the beautiful environment and opportunities for education and recreation.

He is aware of the challenges we face to renew our aging infrastructure and create housing options that meet the needs of single people, families and retired.

Letter To The Editor: Quit Worrying About Who Is On The Other Side

By JOYCE ANDERSON
Los Alamos

Beware of politicians who promise big things, talk about future successes as a a sure thing, and whose surrogates find it necessary to “call the other side out” in opinion pieces.

Neither Lisa Shin or Chris Chandler are perfect, or even good candidates. Both are making promises they cannot and will not keep. Both are standing on platforms of ideals only – but then again aren’t all politicians?

The ideals our chosen candidate espouses will most likely be forgotten when the winner of the race is tossed into the meat grinder that is the New Mexico

Letter To The Editor: Worthy Woman

By DICK and NANCY BOUDRIE
Los Alamos

We usually don’t write an opinion letter to the newspaper. After receiving a derogatory flyer in the mail against Christine Chandler, we decided to write an opinion supporting Christine Chandler for the New Mexico House Dist. 43.

Christine and I (Nancy) worked together on two cases at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, and I found her excellent in working with the facts and picking out the truth for a fair, legal decision. Christine has always listened, weighed the facts and worked hard for the people of Los Alamos.

As with all community issues, there are always Read More

Letter To The Editor: Time For A Qualified Judge

By JON DOORN
Los Alamos High School Senior

I strongly encourage Los Alamos Voters to vote for Elizabeth Allen as municipal court judge. She is the only candidate that has law credentials, and she has plenty of experience involving what the municipal court handles. She has been running her own law firm for over 10 years and has shown her commitment to our community through her involvement in the Los Alamos Teen Court.

I first met Elizabeth three years ago when I joined the Los Alamos Teen Court as a freshman. For readers who are not familiar with Teen Court, it is a system where teens who commit misdemeanors Read More

Letter To The Editor: Please Vote For Judge Alan Kirk!

By MORRIS PONGRATZ
Los Alamos County Council

I urge the voters of Los Alamos County to re-elect Judge Alan Kirk. Alan is seeking his sixth four-year term as Municipal Judge. Alan has lived in Los Alamos for 60 years and served as Los Alamos Police Chief before becoming a judge. Many times, the voters of Los Alamos have endorsed Alan for his outstanding service to our community.

Others have also recognized Alan’s judgement and vision. The New Mexico Supreme Court appointed him to the State Judicial Information Oversight Board and to the Chief Judges Council, which has representation

Letter To The Editor: Christine Chandler Cares

By CRISTINA OLDS
Los Alamos

You may have just read my name and thought, “Hm, who’s that?” The answer is, no one in particular, and that’s why I’m writing.

I was no one to the County Councilors when I emailed them about the sheriff issue, about the immigration proclamation, and about the flow trail. Christine Chandler warmly reached out to meet for coffee and discuss the myriad angles of each issue, despite me being no one of importance.

Christine has consistently offered her deep knowledge on a number of topics that relate to the County when my progressive activism group, Voices of Los Alamos, has Read More

Head2Head: Common Ground – Or Not

By BONNIE J. GORDON
Los Alamos Daily Post
bjgordon@ladailypost.com

The questions I ask first when strategizing about anything are:

  1. What outcome do I want to achieve?
  2. How will I get there?
  3. What are the advantages and/or the downsides of this plan of action?

These questions also work for clarifying what separates you and the person you’re talking with on a policy issue.

Suppose the person you’re talking with is from the opposite political party and they say access to quality health care is the most important issue to them. Since that’s really important to you, too, there’s some common ground to work Read More

Letter To The Editor: Setting The Record Straight

By JAMES E. RICKMAN
Los Alamos

I appreciated the story (link) in the Los Alamos Daily Post about the League of Women Voters forum for magistrate judge candidates. However, I believe the reporter misconstrued a statement that was attributed to me and I would like to take the opportunity to correct the record.

After I had stated my belief that victims should be made whole to the extent possible after a crime and that courts should work toward restorative justice, a gentleman in the audience asked whether the candidates favored alternatives to jail time, particularly for youthful offenders.

Letter To The Editor: Disappointed In Lack Of Respect For Our American Flag During Homecoming Parade

By Homecoming Parade Spectator
Los Alamos

Recently, I watched the LAHS Homecoming Parade on Central Avenue. I was very disappointed to observe a lack of respect for our American flag as the Jr. ROTC led the parade down the street. How will our children and grandchildren learn proper flag etiquette and respect if adults do not show proper flag etiquette when watching parades?

I did a bit of research and discovered the following U.S. Flag Code information from military.com on the Internet:

“During the ceremony of hoisting or lowering the flag or when the flag is passing in a parade or in review, all Read More
