By CHERYL AND MORRIE PONGRATZ
Los Alamos

We urge the Los Alamos County voters to vote for our friend, David Izraelevitz, for County Council. David and his wife, Terry, have lived in Los Alamos for 23 years.

David has served our county well during his seven years on the County Council. As council chair David has promoted transparency and communication with his media reports. David is a LANL Retiree. The members of the New Mexico Municipal League demonstrated their respect for and confidence in David by voting him in as the President-Elect of the League. We especially appreciate David’s

Letter To The Editor: We Need Randall Ryti’s Calm, Level-headed Reasoning And Approach To Decision-making On Council

By JANE LIN
Los Alamos

I encourage Los Alamos residents to vote for Randall Ryti for County Councilor. Randy has the stamina, drive, and sense of service required of councilors. Already he has been attending open council meetings to familiarize himself with current issues and how the council works.

As one of the early board members of PEEC, he knows it takes dedication, creative thinking, and working with others to make things happen. His experience as a parent, small business owner, and member/leader with a variety of organizations (basketball, transportation, science fair, nature) gives

Letter To The Editor: ‘New Mexico Right To Work Committee’ Connected To National Organization

By J. E. NORDHOLT
Los Alamos

I recently received a mailing from the “New Mexico Right to Work Committee.” It is a large and expensive direct mail campaign including cards for me to send to non-right to work candidates in the state urging them to vote for right-to-work legislation in our state.

A quick look online for the “New Mexico Right to Work Committee” connects to the “National Right to Work Committee” which was the subject of a recent documentary on PBS. The documentary is called “Dark Money” and can be streamed from PBS here https:////www.pbs.org/pov/darkmoney/ and

World Futures: Ethics, Technology & Time – Part One

By ANDY ANDREWS
Los Alamos World Futures Institute

Ethics involves the concepts of right and wrong. When considering the future of humanity, human beings collectively, we make an implicit assumption that humanity is good and that it should continue forever.

This further implies that we should be concerned about our descendants a hundred million years from now even though human beings as we know them have only been around for about 200,000 years. Obviously we cannot fashion the hundred year future, but we can avoid making damaging mistakes. It is our ethical duty to try.

Letter To The Editor: Permanent Funds Of New Mexico

By VERNON N. KERR
Former Representative

Politicians and special interests drool at the sight and sound of the money in the state’s permanent funds. In every election cycle some candidate promises to use the permanent fund to do great things.

However, there are limitations, there are restrictions on how funds in these can be used and for good reason. These are not reserve funds or rainy day funds. They are dedicated monies.

There are three Permanent Funds, the Land Grant Permanent Fund (LGPF), the Severance Tax Permanent Fund (STPF) and the Tobacco Settlement Permanent Fund (TSPF). The

Letter To The Editor: Catholic Church

By CAMILLE MORRISON
Los Alamos

I would like to make some comments on a column (link) by Father Glenn Jones that was published recently about an editorial (link) that was published Sept. 12, 2018 in the New Mexican.

His response to why women can’t be ordained priests was to quote an apostolic letter written by Pope John Paul II, which states, “Though women (for theological, not arbitrary, reasons) are not ordained, they remain invaluable nonetheless to the operation of parishes; hospitals, various ministries and to the global church.” Women have come a long way since that was published Read More

Letter To The Editor: Really, Dog Owners?

By LINDA N. MCCORMICK
Los Alamos

Today, with an out-of-state visitor, I hiked the Canyon Rim Trail and was astonished and embarrassed by all the dog droppings on and along the trail.

One owner had dutifully picked up droppings and left the full bag by the path for someone else to remove it!

My visitor is from an area of the country where citizens are very concerned about the environment and keeping it pleasant for everyone; she was quite surprised to find Los Alamos residents so uncaring.

This dog owner behavior seems puzzling when one considers that supplies are provided

Letter To The Editor: I Urge Everyone In House Dist. 43 To Vote For Christine Chandler

By MORRIS PONGRATZ
Los Alamos County Council

I urge the voters of New Mexico House District 43 to vote for my friend and colleague, Christine Chandler.

I have known and worked with Christine for more than 20 years. We served together on the county council, the LAPS Foundation Board of Directors and the Los Alamos Charter Review Committee. I know Christine to be a hard-worker, an excellent study of the issues, an eloquent speaker and an ethical person. She is not a party ideologue; she works across the aisle for all. We don’t always agree, but I always respect her opinion knowing that it is well
