Letter To The Editor: I Recommend Christine Chandler

By SHEILA BROWN
Santa Fe

I highly recommend Christine Chandler for District 43, New Mexico State House. I have known Christine for more than 30 years as a colleague, supervisor and friend. She is a person of energy, intelligence and integrity. In all the time I have known her, she has devoted herself to public service and to volunteering in the community.

As we all know, New Mexico has a serious problem with its education system. This impacts not only the lives and futures of the children themselves, but the ability of our state economy to thrive in a highly competitive atmosphere. Christine

Letter To The Editor: It’s The Guns

By NINA THAYER
Los Alamos Resident

There is a simple explanation for the death’s of eight students and two teachers last Friday in Santa Fe, Texas. It’s the guns. David Frum writes in the Atlantic Monthly Tuesday (5/22/2018), “Americans of high-school age are 82 times more likely to die from a gun homicide than 15- to 19-year-olds in the rest of the developed world.”

Why is this? The most straightforward answer is the presence of 270 million guns in the US, more than any country in the world, and a culture that promotes guns as a symbol of status, power and manhood, Guns for sport, guns

Letter To The Editor: Thank You Good Samaritan!

By Terry DuBois
Los Alamos

I accidentally left my wallet on the ground when locking my bicycle at the bike rack at Smiths on May 24. I was admiring a sweet dog who was tethered to the bike racks and did not notice my wallet on the ground as I walked inside.

Upon discovering it gone in the check out line, I was heart sick thinking I’d never see it again. However, Los Alamos is full of really good people, and somebody did indeed turn it into the right people at Smiths! I had recently cashed a check so it was full of cash, plus the usual credit cards and ID.

I just hope the person that turned it in sees this letter and Read More

Letter To The Editor: Judge Shaffer Is Hard Working And Professional

By THOMAS E. CLIFFORD, PHD
UNM Regent and former Secretary of Finance and Administration
Santa Fe

I worked closely with District Court Judge Greg Shaffer when he was General Counsel and I was Cabinet Secretary of the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration (DFA).

DFA’s workload includes a wide variety of legal challenges and an extensive amount of interaction with other agencies and local and tribal governments. The work is highly challenging, due to the volume, the technical difficulty and the interpersonal skills required to enable collaboration and cooperation

By ROBERT WELLS
Los Alamos

Los Alamos Democrats (plus others in House District 43) have to choose in the upcoming New Mexico primary election for State Representative (June 5, with early voting open through June 2) between two Los Alamos County Councilors, Pete Sheehey, a retired LANL scientist, and Christine Chandler, an attorney.

I have supported both Pete and Chris in each of their previous campaigns, but my choice in this election is Pete Sheehey. In making this choice I asked myself: (a) Who will make the greatest effort needed to address a complex range of diverse citizen concerns across Read More

Letter To The Editor: Share The Road…

By LYNN HANRAHAN
Los Alamos

Thank you Ms. Christoffersen for the letter on cycling safety! Your comment about keeping the roads’ shoulders clean and safe really struck a nerve after something I saw last month.

It was lunchtime on Good Friday and my daughter and I were driving from North Mesa to the grocery store when a local landscaping truck lost an enormous piece of glass from its trailer ahead of us on Conoco Hill. Approaching the hill it wasn’t apparent at first how much glass was there so we ran over it.

We then drove up to Urban Street and backtracked to wait for the police who Read More

Letter To The Editor: Los Alamos Needs Christine Chandler’s Brains, Talent, Commitment Representing Us

By Janie O’Rourke
Los Alamos

I am writing in support of Christine Chandler for Seat 43 in the New Mexico House of Representatives.

Christine has all the important attributes to make her an outstanding representative for Los Alamos. She is hard working, smart as a tack, perseveres when the going gets tough, and she is completely capable of holding her own against the prevailing wind. But in addition, Christine also is capable of listening to all sides, and open to new ideas and new solutions that make sense.

Christine brings years of important experience in both the professional, as well Read More

Letter To The Editor: Bike To Work Day … Disaster Waiting To Happen?

By CAT CHRISTOFFERSEN
White Rock

I am an avid cyclist, riding for multiple charity events and the like. I love road cycling and find a way to avoid vehicles for the most part (travel on less-used roadways, use a mirror to be safe, avoid heavy traffic periods, wear brightly colored clothing, wave at vehicles that pass me safely, etc.).

I did take part in ride-to-work day Friday and have a few comments. So many people read the Post, and hence I was hoping you could help me make this day (and every day) safer for cyclists.

I rode my bike to work Friday from White Rock, choosing to take the Read More
