Letter To The Editor: Vote ‘For’ Question 1 To Eliminate Dangerous Confusion

By ROBERT GIBSON*
Los Alamos

John Horne’s recent letter cites various state statutes (laws) granting powers to county sheriffs. Unmentioned is the New Mexico Constitution, which is superior to those laws. Art. X, Sec 5C grants to Los Alamos County the power, through our County Charter, to establish our “form and organization … of government” and to “designate those officers which shall be elected.” The same section also allows us to designate “those officers and employees which shall perform the duties assigned by law to county officers.”

Letter To The Editor: Perilous Confusion About Police

DAVID NORTH
Los Alamos

The Los Alamos Daily Post should be commended for the fair and thorough coverage of the LWV Forum incident involving Sheriff Lucero and John Horne. Unfortunately in so doing, a potential for perilous confusion was created.

Most often when someone needs help or suspects illegal activity, citizens will call 911. That way you Read More

Letter To The Editor: Response To ‘LWV Forum Incident’

By GEORGE CHANDLER
Los Alamos

I have no knowledge other than press reports and John Horne’s letter regarding the “LWV Forum Incident,” reported by him in the Daily Post.

But Mr. Horne escalates the incident into “an attempt to suppress political speech” and “an instance of corruption” in the Los Alamos Police Department that supposedly illustrates the need for a Sheriff in Los Alamos. He could not be further from the truth. Quite the contrary, the incident exemplifies the confusion surrounding the Sheriff’s Office and the status of so-called deputies complicating the enforcement of law in Read More
