FBI: Thoreau Woman Charged With Involuntary Manslaughter

ALBUQUERQUE — A Thoreau woman was charged by indictment with involuntary manslaughter.

Nora Abeita, 49, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, appeared before a federal judge today and will remain on conditions of release pending trial, which has not been scheduled.

According to the indictment, May 28, 2023, Abeita was driving without due caution when she killed John Doe.

If convicted of the current charges, Abeita faces up to eight years in prison.

NM State Police Arrests Men For Kidnapping; Child Abuse

NMSP News:

DONA ANA COUNTY — A New Mexico State Police (NMSP) officer was patrolling May 29, 2024 north of Las Cruces on Interstate 25, near milepost 17.

The officer saw a Buick Enclave and the passengers in the back seat were not wearing their seatbelts. The officer initiated a traffic stop, and the driver, Saul Rojas Villa, age 40, pulled over for the officer.

During the traffic stop, the officer discovered 11 undocumented immigrants in the vehicle and 11- and 5-year-old females in the cargo area.

FBI: Nigerian National Sentenced For Romance Scheme

ALBUQUERQUE — A Nigerian National was sentenced to 51 months in prison and ordered to pay $524,000 in restitution and a money judgment in the amount of $868,295 for his role in a hybrid romance scam and business email compromise scheme.

There is no parole in the federal system.

The Los Alamos Police Department (LAPD) has received several reports of residents receiving mail or phone calls stating they won the Publisher’s Clearing House (PCH) sweepstakes.

Driver safety is a big focus of the Los Alamos Police Department, Los Alamos County Council learned during its May 21 work session.

Promoting safe driving and curb poor driving is under discussion.

According to the staff report, there is some good news in the traffic citation data. Accidents total 75 so far in 2024, a drop compared to 196 in 2023 and 751 in 2022. Criminal citations related to traffic decreased to six so far in 2024 compared to 34 in 2023 and 24 in 2022.

NMSP Participate In National Click It Or Ticket Campaign

NMSP News:

From May 20 through June 2, 2024, the New Mexico State Police (NMSP) participated in the National Occupant Protection Mobilization, Click it or Ticket (CIOT) Campaign.

The CIOT Campaign was conducted on all roadways within the state with an emphasis on seat belt use for both drivers and passengers.  

During the two-week CIOT Campaign, New Mexico State Police officers issued a total of 373 traffic citations (232 citations were for lack of seat belt usage and 21 citations were for no child restraint). Officers made a total of 6 arrests (1 DWI arrest, and 5 Misdemeanor arrests).

FBI: Vanderwagon Man Indicted On Federal Firearms Offenses

ALBUQUERQUE — A Vangerwagon man was charged by indictment with multiple federal firearms offenses and attempted murder.

Perris Jeremiah Arthur, 35, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, appeared before a federal judge Tuesday and will remain in custody pending trial, which has not been scheduled.

According to the indictment, May 1, 2023, Arthur assaulted John Doe with a rifle with the intent to commit murder.

New Mexico State Police Participate In C.A.R.E. Operation

During the Memorial Day holiday, the New Mexico State Police participated in the Combined Accident Reduction Effort (C.A.R.E.) operation across all roadways within the state.
