ALBUQUERQUE — Alexander M.M. Uballez, United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, announced that Jeremy Dennis was sentenced to 4 years in prison.

Dennis, 43, of Mescalero, and an enrolled member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe, pled guilty to assault on a federal officer in Indian Country June 26, 2023.

Quay County – On Friday, March 15, 2024, at around 5 a.m., New Mexico State Police (NMSP) Ofc. Justin Hare was dispatched to Interstate 40, near milepost 318, to assist a motorist in a white BMW who had a flat tire and was attempting to wave down other motorists.

The suspect in Ofc. Justin Hare’s murder has been identified as Jaremy Smith, 32, of Marion, S.C.

New Mexico State Police (NMSP) has issued an arrest warrant for Smith, charging him with:

            • First Degree Murder;
            • Armed Robbery;
            • Shooting at or from a Motor Vehicle;
            • Tampering with Evidence;
            • Felon in Possession of a Firearm;
            • Unlawful Taking of a Motor Vehicle; and
            • Criminal Damage to Property.

SANTA FE — The attached document below is an internal Incident Review that a committee of New Mexico State Police (NMSP) officers conducted in reference to the Darian Jarrott fatal shooting, which occurred Feb. 4, 2021 on Interstate 10 near Las Cruces.

The analysis and recommendations from it resulted in several internal NMSP policy changes by Chief Tim Johnson.
