Mark Bjorklund was the best predictor in the weekly pace race held Tuesday on the west end of the Canyon Rim Trail with a 7 second differential off his predicted time. 

Other accurate predictors were: 

  • Tony Borek at 38 seconds off;
  • Gannon Parker with a 50 second difference;
  • Sean Thomas recording a 54 second differential; and
  • Roxana Candia and David Wilmot tied at 57 seconds off

Wildlife Law Violation Checkpoints Underway Statewide

NMGF News:

The Department of Game and Fish (NMGF) will conduct checkpoints throughout the state this hunting season to collect biological data and to detect wildlife law violations.

As a result, the public may encounter minor delays. Department officers may be assisted by other law enforcement agencies such as the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, New Mexico State Police or county sheriff’s offices.

Santa Fe National Forest Lifts Campfire Restrictions

SFNF News:

SANTA FE — The Santa Fe National Forest will lift campfire and smoking restrictions effective 8 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, 2023, based on decreasing fire danger.

Fire managers continually evaluate conditions across the forest to determine when to implement or rescind fire restrictions. With the onset of the more traditional monsoonal weather pattern, fire danger has significantly decreased with the increased moisture, cloud cover, and higher humidity.

SANTA FE — New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) announces the New Mexico Regional Recreation Centers and Quality of Life Grant. During the 2023 Legislative Session, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed legislation appropriating $40 Million for projects statewide to plan, design, furnish, equip, and construct regional recreational projects that contribute to the quality of life for regional residents.

The Black Feather Fire, burning approximately 9 miles south of Gallina on the Coyote Ranger District, on the San Pedro Parks Wilderness, near the Peñas Negras Trail on the Santa Fe National Forest, remains at 2,198 acres consumed as of this morning with 5 percent contained. Lightning sparked this fire Aug. 5 and it is burning timber, brush and understory.

Reminder: Los Alamos Hilltopper 5K Race This Saturday!

LAPS News:

There’s still time to register for the Hilltopper 5K! The race starts at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 at Canyon Rim Trail beginning at the west end of the Canyon Rim Trail in the Smith’s Marketplace parking lot.

The race will be an out and back course along the paved trail. The attached course map shows the route. A one mile run for kids is included and starts at 8 a.m. Packet pick-up will be between 3-7 p.m., Friday at the Aquatic Center, or beginning at 7 a.m. at the race location on Saturday.
