Black Feather Fire Update: Weather Temporarily Moderating Behavior Of Blaze

Fire Information Update:

The Black Feather Fire, burning approximately 9 miles south of Gallina on the Coyote Ranger District, on the San Pedro Parks Wilderness, near the Peñas Negras Trail on the Santa Fe National Forest, remains at 2,198 acres consumed as of this morning and 0 percent contained. The fire is burning timber, brush and understory.

Jemez Historic Site Hosts Pueblo Independence Day Aug. 13

DCA News:

Jemez Historic Site (JHS) will host the annual commemoration of Pueblo Independence Day Sunday, Aug. 13.

Visitors will be able to watch dancers from Jemez Pueblo, tour the ancestral village of Giusewa Pueblo and San José de los Jemez mission, shop arts and crafts from local vendors, and grab a bite to eat. Adrian Wall, a popular local musician, will be performing throughout the day, as will dancers from Jemez Pueblo.

Tom Smith has accepted the Manhattan Project National Historical Park (MPNHP) Los Alamos site manager position. As another milestone for the park, Smith will be the first permanent site manager at Los Alamos. He brings a variety of experiences and skills to the park and begins his new position mid-September.

Office Of Outdoor Recreation Begins Next Chapter With New Executive Director Ana Karina Armijo

SANTA FE — The Office of Outdoor Recreation has a new executive director. Ana Karina Armijo, who most recently served as marketing and tourism  director for the Town of Taos, was hired to fill the role of executive director for the Office of Outdoor Recreation. Armijo will officially enter the role Sept. 18, 2023.

Armijo first began her role with the Town of Taos in 2015. Since then, she implemented a tourism promotion strategy that grew annual Lodgers’ Tax collections from $800,000 to $1.75 million.

BLM Seeks Public Comment For Río Grande Del Norte National Monument Plan

TAOS The Bureau of Land Management will begin a 30-day public scoping period Friday, Aug. 11 to inform the upcoming environmental analysis of a resource management plan for the Río Grande del Norte National Monument.

The plan will protect the resource values for which the monument was designated and provide for traditional, recreational, and other uses of monument lands and resources. The scoping period closes Sept. 10, 2023.

Bandelier To Increase Overnight Camping Fees Oct. 1

BANDELIER News:

Bandelier National Monument will implement increased overnight camping fees at Juniper Campground and Ponderosa Group Campground beginning Oct. 1.

Additionally Oct. 1, reservations can be made online for the first time through Recreation.gov for some individual campsites in Juniper Campground.

Under the new fee rates, Bandelier will continue to offer half priced camping for Interagency Senior pass holders and Interagency Lifetime Access pass holders. The new amenity fee rates for overnight camping are based on comparable fees for similar services in nearby campgrounds. Read More

Despite a healthy snowpack and abundant precipitation in May the threat of wildfires exist in Northern New Mexico.

That threat is now a reality as a lightening-caused wildfire ignited in the Jemez Mountains Aug. 5 near Gallina. By Monday (Aug. 7) it had grown to 2000+ acres. No evacuations have been ordered, but residents of Mesa de Poleo near Gallina have been advised to be able to evacuate quickly if so ordered.
